Job Summary The University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security, Flint Campus Department of Public Safety (UM-Flint DPS) is a full-service, 24-hour public safety department that works to ensure a safe and secure environment for the Flint campus community and the surrounding area. Our officers and staff are highly trained professionals equipped to serve all members of our community. We manage all law enforcement and security operations on the Flint campus and offer an integrated, collaborative approach to safety and security, partnering across the University to provide a safe community and improve the quality of life for all those living, learning, working, and visiting our community. UM-Flint DPS is a seven (7) day per week, twenty-four (24) hour per day operation. Work schedules may include nights, afternoons, weekends, holidays, and occasional unanticipated overtime. This is a uniform position in accordance with the DPSS uniform dress code. Patrol assignments may include both mobile and building-specific responsibilities. Salary Range Information The pay range for new external hires is $48,942.40 to $59,550.40 per year, based on education and experience. The full pay range for current DPSS Public Safety Officers is $48,942.40 to $61,921.60 per year, based on education and experience. This salary information is based on the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Michigan and the Police Officers Association of Michigan. Responsibilities* Under the direction of the on-duty shift sergeant and the UM-Flint DPS command team, you will perform the following tasks: Ensure public safety, protect our assets and act as the primary liaison with state and local police, fire and security agencies; act calmly in emergency situations and use emergency equipmentWork closely with campus staff, de-escalate non-violent situations; investigate criminal activity; assist students, staff, and visitors as neededPatrol campus buildings and surrounding areas and monitor fire, security, and access control alarm systemsDetect safety hazards and criminal activityUse your customer service skills and cultural safety mindset to respectfully communicate and work with all community membersMaintain confidentiality in all mattersPrepare incident and security reportsAscend and descend multiple flights of stairs as part of the routine patrolProvide services such as but not limited to: escorts, wayfinding, unlocks, motorists assists, well-being checks, property control, and traffic and crowd controlMove equipment such as barricades and fire extinguishersWork collaboratively to support all departments within DPSS Required Qualifications* High school or GED equivalent + 1 year of experience in a security, fire, military, customer service or emergency management fieldExperience with the enforcement of fire, safety and security practicesSkillset in handling emergency situations and using associated equipmentBasic proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and basic keyboardingA valid driver's license and a driving record with less than 6 pointsYou must pass a comprehensive public safety background investigation, drug screening, psychological evaluation, and physical examination Why Work at U-M Flint? On-site is defined as a designated U-M-owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan. Additional Information All members of the Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. As such, you are required to report Clery reportable offenses that come to your attention. DPSS employees are required to complete Clery Compliance Training within the first 14 days of employment and annually thereafter. Union Affiliation This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Police Officers Association of Michigan union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
