Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Patrols and monitors the RIT campus grounds to ensure the safety and security of students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
- Maintains a visible and approachable presence to provide confidence in university security and deter criminal activity.
- Affords assistance with and coordinates emergency response during medical incidents, fire evacuations, and natural disasters.
- Identifies suspicious activity and security breaches, responds to calls for service, and addresses disturbances, noise complaints, trespassing, theft, and other security related incidents on campus.
- Reports security incidents and documents all details thoroughly and accurately for follow up action, investigation, or insurance claims. Communicates with law enforcement, emergency services, and university administrators as needed.
- Conducts routine security checks on university facilities to ensure they are locked and secure, especially during non-operating hours.
- Provides customer service, information, and directions to students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Answers questions and offers assistance regarding policies, directions, and events.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of security operations, safety procedures, and basic law enforcement procedures.
- Knowledge of emergency response protocols for medical emergencies, fires, natural disasters, and active threat situations.
- Skills in observation and surveillance to detect suspicious activities and security risks.
- Skills in written and verbal communication to interact with students, faculty, staff, visitors, law enforcement, and emergency responders and document security-related incidents.
- Ability to quickly and critically assess security threats and determine appropriate action to prevent or mitigate harm.
- Ability to remain calm, focused, and composed during potentially stressful or high-pressure situations, emergencies, or incidents.
Minimum Education & Experience
- High School diploma or GED
- 1 year of relevant experience
- NYS Security Guard License
Job Level Overview
An entry-level role building knowledge and skills. Performs routine, well-defined, easy-to-understand tasks that can typically be learned in a short period of time. Work is performed under close supervision using clearly prescribed methods and detailed instructions.
Additional Details
- The Public Safety Department is a 24/7 operation, 365 days/year. There are 4 different patrol shifts and the person hired will most likely be assigned to the afternoon or overnight shift, which includes differential pay.
- Premium pay is given for holidays and other days as determined by the Public Safety Department. Some overtime is required to maintain appropriate staffing levels and to staff special events throughout the year.
- Required to be available for overtime, call ins and possible shift changes on short notice and rotating days off to maintain appropriate staffing levels and for special events throughout the year.
- Shifts: Afternoon/Evening (B,C) 2PM - 10PM Night (D) 10PM-6AM Rotating days off
Compensation
$23 - $25/hr
