Public Safety Officer
Position Summary
This position is part of a team of employees that work together to help fulfill the mission and goals of the Department of Public Safety (DPS). The Public Safety Officer (PSO) position exists for three reasons: General Assistance, Safety, and Investigation. The PSO serves in a public relations capacity, ensures the safety and security of campus visitors and facilities, and conducts preliminary investigations. This position is part of a team of professionals, including sworn officers, who are responsible for maintaining the peace and security of the campus. Along with the sworn officers, the PSO acts as a liaison with federal, state, and local police and fire officials.
About the Role
The PSO is responsible for providing information and general assistance to the students, staff, and other visitors of the College by being visible, approachable, and available. They also ensure the safety and security of campus visitors and facilities through patrols, and conduct preliminary investigations following appropriate procedures.
Responsibilities
- Provide information and general assistance to students, staff, and visitors.
- Patrol the campus to observe and secure the premises.
- Conduct preliminary investigations and document findings.
- Communicate with federal, state, and local police and fire officials.
- Exercise sound judgment on issues that arise.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Demonstrated dependability, reliability, professionalism, and ethical behavior.
- Valid Michigan Driver’s license with a good driving record for the past 5 years.
- Ability to work under high stress environments.
- Knowledge and experience using standard word processing software, such as MS Word.
- Excellent customer service skills and strong oral and written communication abilities.
- Discretion in handling confidential data.
Qualifications
- Experience in security or public safety preferred.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Previous experience working at MCC in the Department of Public Safety.
- Certification from a certified dispatch school.
- Knowledge of motor vehicle accident investigation, traffic accident reports, parking violations, and ticket writing procedures.
- Knowledge of physical security procedures, patrol procedures, techniques, and information gathering.
- Knowledge of criminal and non-criminal report writing.
- Basic first aid, CPR, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) knowledge.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
- Ability to move about the campus while remaining in a stationary position for extended periods.
- Ability to add numbers and write narrative reports.
- Ability to listen effectively and interview individuals.
- Ability to recognize and use regular and military time.
- Visual ability to read and identify identification cards and license plates.
- Ability to operate motor vehicles using an automatic gearshift.
Work Schedule
Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
- Security or public safety experience.
- Associates or Bachelor’s degree.
- Previous experience working at MCC in the Department of Public Safety.
