About the role
Maryville University is seeking a dedicated and service-oriented Public Safety Officer to join our campus safety team. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about public service, community engagement, emergency response, and helping others.
Responsibilities
- Campus Safety & Security:
- Conduct proactive foot and vehicle patrols across campus to maintain a safe and secure environment.
- Monitor campus facilities and grounds, identify safety concerns, and ensure building security.
- Respond to security alarms, fire alarms, suspicious activity, and calls for service.
- Detect and deter criminal activity and take appropriate enforcement action when necessary.
- Emergency Response:
- Respond promptly to medical emergencies and provide first aid, CPR, and AED assistance when needed.
- Aid during campus emergencies, severe weather events, evacuations, and other crisis situations.
- Support emergency preparedness efforts and help ensure the safety of the university community.
- Investigations & Reporting:
- Conduct preliminary investigations and gather information related to incidents and criminal activity.
- Maintain accurate reports, daily logs, and incident documentation.
- Absorb follow-up investigations as directed.
- Community Engagement & Service:
- Provide assistance to students, employees, and visitors.
- Enforce university parking regulations and assist motorists as needed.
- Direct traffic during special events and emergencies.
- Foster positive relationships through professionalism, visibility, and customer service.
- Professional Development:
- Participate in required training programs, including:
- First Aid/CPR/AED
- Firearms certification
- OC Spray and Baton certification
- Active Shooter Response
- De-escalation techniques
- Other department-required training
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to obtain and maintain:
- Metro Security License
- Firearms certification
- OC Spray certification
- ASP Baton certification
- Handcuff certification
- First Aid, CPR, and AED certification
- Knowledge & Skills:
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
- Understanding of security and law enforcement practices, preferably within a higher education environment.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and conflict-resolution skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong organizational and report-writing skills.
- Commitment to professionalism, integrity, and service.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with and serve a diverse campus community.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior law enforcement, military, campus safety, security, or emergency response experience.
- Experience working in a higher education environment.
- Familiarity with security technologies such as CCTV, access control systems, and ID card systems.

Additional Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 45 pounds.
- Ability to perform foot patrols and operate a patrol vehicle.
- Ability to provide CPR and first aid without assistance.
- Availability to work evenings, overnight shifts, weekends, holidays, and other assigned schedules.
