About the role

Maryville University is seeking a dedicated and service-oriented Public Safety Officer to join our campus safety team. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about public service, community engagement, emergency response, and helping others.

Responsibilities

  • Campus Safety & Security:
    • Conduct proactive foot and vehicle patrols across campus to maintain a safe and secure environment.
    • Monitor campus facilities and grounds, identify safety concerns, and ensure building security.
    • Respond to security alarms, fire alarms, suspicious activity, and calls for service.
    • Detect and deter criminal activity and take appropriate enforcement action when necessary.
  • Emergency Response:
    • Respond promptly to medical emergencies and provide first aid, CPR, and AED assistance when needed.
    • Aid during campus emergencies, severe weather events, evacuations, and other crisis situations.
    • Support emergency preparedness efforts and help ensure the safety of the university community.
  • Investigations & Reporting:
    • Conduct preliminary investigations and gather information related to incidents and criminal activity.
    • Maintain accurate reports, daily logs, and incident documentation.
    • Absorb follow-up investigations as directed.
  • Community Engagement & Service:
    • Provide assistance to students, employees, and visitors.
    • Enforce university parking regulations and assist motorists as needed.
    • Direct traffic during special events and emergencies.
    • Foster positive relationships through professionalism, visibility, and customer service.
  • Professional Development:
    • Participate in required training programs, including:
    • First Aid/CPR/AED
    • Firearms certification
    • OC Spray and Baton certification
    • Active Shooter Response
    • De-escalation techniques
    • Other department-required training

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain:
    • Metro Security License
    • Firearms certification
    • OC Spray certification
    • ASP Baton certification
    • Handcuff certification
    • First Aid, CPR, and AED certification
  • Knowledge & Skills:
    • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
    • Understanding of security and law enforcement practices, preferably within a higher education environment.
    • Strong communication, interpersonal, and conflict-resolution skills.
    • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
    • Strong organizational and report-writing skills.
    • Commitment to professionalism, integrity, and service.
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with and serve a diverse campus community.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior law enforcement, military, campus safety, security, or emergency response experience.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Familiarity with security technologies such as CCTV, access control systems, and ID card systems.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 45 pounds.
  • Ability to perform foot patrols and operate a patrol vehicle.
  • Ability to provide CPR and first aid without assistance.
  • Availability to work evenings, overnight shifts, weekends, holidays, and other assigned schedules.
