Public Safety Officer

About the Role

Responsible for providing support to Public Safety operations at Children's Wisconsin facilities. Duties include patrolling assigned areas, responding to emergent situations, performing inspection tours, investigating incidents, general office or record-keeping tasks, de-escalating and restraining disruptive individuals, performing weapon screening services, securing property/evidence, and liaising with law enforcement.

Responsibilities

• Patrols (by foot and vehicle) assigned areas of facilities and grounds according to established schedule and investigates unusual occurrences. Performs parking enforcement duties, including operating parking equipment and directing customers.
• Investigates and writes incident reports on security-related incidents such as crimes, injuries, or property loss. Obtains and processes evidence and interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects.
• Assists Public Safety Dispatchers in the Communication Center, dispatches personnel, answers emergency lines, monitors surveillance and alarm systems, and responds to intercom and elevator calls.
• Responds to emergency situations, including crowd control, disturbance resolution, verbal and physical intervention, firefighting, medical emergencies, and combative or disruptive patients. May include court appearances.
• Performs weapon screening services to prevent prohibited items from entering facilities. Secures property/evidence and conducts security inspection tours, notifying appropriate personnel of issues.
• Questions or detains suspicious individuals or criminal violators on Children's Wisconsin properties. Restrains disorderly or combative individuals to prevent harm.
• Badges and screens visitors per visitation policy, provides wayfinding, directs or escorts employees, visitors, and patients, and performs traffic control. Provides basic hospital information services.
• Maintains current knowledge of Children's Wisconsin policies and department Standards of Work through regular review of internal communications and meetings.

Requirements

• High School graduate or equivalent (GED/HSED) required.
• Post-high school coursework in criminal justice or related field preferred.
• 1+ years of previous customer service experience required.
• 1+ years of experience as a uniformed security officer in healthcare, public safety, corporate security, law enforcement, or military service preferred.
• 1+ years of experience performing weapon screening preferred.

Skills

• Acceptable driving record and ability to be insured by CHHS carrier.
• Ability to complete all required organizational and department training, including annual competencies.
• Strong reading and writing skills for incident reports and recordkeeping.
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills for interacting with staff and visitors under potentially stressful situations.
• Intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Epic hospital software, CAD, incident reporting, surveillance systems, and weapon screening technology.
• Analytical skills for managing emergent situations, inspecting hospital areas, and preparing security reports.
• Ability to complete and maintain training in physical/verbal intervention, use of security equipment (baton, handcuffs), and clinical violent restraint devices.
• Ability to pass the Physical Capacity Exam (PCE).
• Professional and calming demeanor in emergent situations.
• Marcus Crisis Prevention Program Certification (MCPP) – Marcus Autism Center required within 1 year of hire.

Qualifications

• BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification (American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council) within 90 days of hire.
• Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License.
