Public Safety Officer (9:00 pm - 7:00 am)

Creighton University’s Department of Public Safety is hiring an overnight Public Safety Officer for the 9:00 pm – 7:00 am shift (10-hour shifts). The team consists of 3 shift managers, 3 lead officers, 18 unarmed and armed officers, and 6 dispatchers, ensuring campus security, enforcement, emergency management, and parking on the Omaha Campus.

About the role

The Public Safety Officer protects life and property while demonstrating integrity, community engagement, and sound judgment under pressure. Officers patrol campus by vehicle, bike, or foot; respond to emergency and non-emergency calls; apply crime-prevention techniques; and conduct investigations using surveillance and access records.

Responsibilities

• Patrol campus areas, assisting students, employees, and visitors.
• Respond quickly to emergency threats and service calls to resolve problems.
• Enforce parking violations and secure or unlock buildings as needed.
• Provide motorist assistance, including jump starts and other vehicle support.
• Respond to fire and security alarms, providing first aid and initial situational assessment until local responders arrive.
• Conduct original and follow-up investigations using video surveillance and access-control records.
• Document incidents promptly and accurately within the reporting system.
• Engage with students, faculty, and staff in formal and informal settings to foster positive relationships.
• Perform dispatcher duties or other assignments as needed.

Armed Officers Only

• Safely and securely maintain and carry a university-owned firearm in compliance with Federal, State, and Local laws and department SOPs.
• Maintain firearms competencies through mandatory annual training and frequent cleaning.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree preferred.
• 1–2 years of work-related experience preferred, ideally in campus law enforcement, security, or emergency services. Additional education may substitute for experience.
• 1–2 years of experience in a role requiring high public interaction, interpersonal skills, and customer service.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Successful completion of pre-employment screening, including criminal background check, motor vehicle report, drug screen, medical/physical exam, and psychological evaluation.

Armed Officers

• Must complete annual firearms training and qualify to carry a semi-automatic pistol under the Nebraska State Qualification Course.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of security operations, safety practices, and enforcement procedures.
• Familiarity with relevant equipment, policies, and strategies for effective security operations.
• Armed officers must be knowledgeable in firearms usage and cleaning techniques.
• Ability to self-start and self-supervise tasks, even under stressful or volatile conditions.
• Strong customer service skills with the ability to assess inquiries critically and provide appropriate resolutions.
• Ability to remain calm during emergencies and relay information effectively to personnel.
• Ability to coordinate and prioritize work with multiple conflicting demands in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to interpret and apply University policies and federal laws (VAWA, FERPA, HIPAA, Clery Act).
• Professionalism in interactions with diverse groups, including faculty, staff, students, guests, and the public.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
• Clear and concise communication in English, both orally and in writing.
• Basic proficiency in MS Word and Outlook; ability to learn incident reporting software.
• Strong verbal communication skills, including enunciation, projection, and articulation compatible with radio and telephone systems.
• Ability to work any of the three operational shifts to meet department needs.
• Physical ability to stand or walk for extended periods, respond quickly on foot or in a vehicle, and work in inclement weather with potential exposure to danger.

Licenses/Certifications

• Valid driver’s license for at least 6 months, with a clean driving record for the last 3 years and no major violations within the last 5 years.
• CPR and first aid certification (training provided).
• Armed officers must annually qualify to carry a semi-automatic pistol under the Nebraska State Qualification Course.
