Requirements
- Must be available to complete all phases of the Special Agent applicant process
- Must successfully complete the Physical Task Assessment (PTA)
- Must successfully complete the Proctored Testing
- Must successfully complete the Basic Qualification Review
- Must successfully complete the Structured Interview
Qualifications
- Must meet the minimum qualification and eligibility requirements of this position
- Must have completed a Federal Criminal Investigation training program through another federal law enforcement agency

Applicant Availability
- MUST be available to complete all phases of the Special Agent applicant process
Phase 1: Physical Task Assessment (PTA)
- Required to evaluate present ability to participate in strenuous physical activities during basic agent training
- Highly encouraged to view the PTA video to ensure understanding of required protocols
Phase 2: Proctored Testing
- Candidates who successfully complete PTA receive email invitation to schedule appointment for Phase 2
- Requires completion of Writing Assessment at a proctored testing center
- Assessments measure Attention to Detail, Memory, Teamwork, Problem Solving, Decision Making
Phase 3: Basic Qualification Review
- Candidates who successfully complete PTA and Written Assessments have resume and supporting documents reviewed
- Evaluation team may exclude candidate if self-ratings are higher than supported by application materials
- Errors or omissions may impact eligibility
Phase 4: Structured Interview
- Candidates who pass Phase 3 are contacted to schedule appointment for Phase 4
- Requires completion of Structured interview
- A panel of interviewers evaluates candidates on Teamwork, Interpersonal Skills, Problem Solving, Oral Communication, Decision Making/Judgement, Self-Management, and Flexibility
Current or former 1811 applicants
- May be considered for an abbreviated hiring process
Location Availability
- The agency is prioritizing border locations
- Location assignments will be determined based on agency needs
Spanish Language Skill
- Strongly encouraged to apply if proficient in speaking, reading, and writing Spanish
- Spanish language skills are highly desirable for investigations involving Latin America, the Southern Border, and international partnerships
- Language assessment may be required
Basic Agent Training
- Applicants who have not completed previous federal law enforcement training must attend and complete a 16-week residential training program
Special Agent Transition Program
- Current or former 1811 applicants who have completed a Federal Criminal Investigation training program may qualify for a 3-week Special Agent Transition Program
- FLETC/CITP Transcripts must be attached
