About the role

The Health Department’s Public Health Bureau is seeking to fill vacant Public Health Nurse II positions in the Children’s Medical Services, Communicable Disease Prevention and Control, and Community Based Nursing divisions.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes and provides nursing services within an assigned specialty, clinic or geographical area.
  • Provides case finding, health counseling and instruction and epidemiological investigation in connection with the prevention and control of disease and the promotion of health.
  • Applies the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation.
  • Evaluates individual and family situations for problems detrimental to good health; conducts health appraisals and screening.
  • Refers clients to appropriate resources, agencies and clinics for further evaluation and treatment.
  • Collaborates with community groups in identifying and developing needed public health services.
  • Coordinates care of individuals and families with public and private agencies; confers with physicians, nursing staff, other agencies and community members.
  • Determines special needs of an assigned area; recommends and implements projects to address those needs.
  • Provides care and treatment for health problems; carries out physicians orders; administers injections and oral medications applied in the home, clinic or group situation.
  • Keeps records, prepares reports, compiles statistical information.

Requirements

  • Thorough Knowledge Of Principles, methods and practices of public health nursing.
  • Community aspects of nursing programs including provisions for continuity of patient care, nursing services in health programs and nursing care in the home.
  • Working Knowledge Of The use of community resources for assistance in public health programs.
  • Federal, state and local laws and regulations governing public health.
  • Epidemiologic investigation, control and care of chronic and communicable diseases and illness, handicapping conditions, mental illness and other disabling conditions.
  • Environmental, sociological and psychological problems associated with public health nursing clients and families.
  • Normal and abnormal human physiological development and behavior patterns.
  • Prevention, detection, reporting and treatment of child abuse and neglect.
  • Principles and procedures involved with family planning, venereal disease control, maternal and child health and communicable diseases.

Qualifications

  • One year of responsible professional experience in public health nursing.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience to satisfactorily perform these duties.

Skills and Abilities

  • Analyzing information and drawing logical conclusions.
  • Speaking effectively to address groups and individuals.
  • Writing to prepare reports and records.
  • Following oral and written instructions.
  • Developing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Using common medical instructions.
  • Managing an assigned caseload.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Ability to speak, read, and write effectively in English and Spanish.

Prior Experience/Education/Training Requirements

  • One year of responsible professional experience in public health nursing.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience to satisfactorily perform these duties.
