PT Payroll Specialist
Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial, and medical fields at a reasonable cost, including tuition waivers for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, SWCC provides associate degrees in business, education, general studies, liberal arts, science, and career-focused programs such as Nursing, Radiography, and Administration of Justice.
About the role
This part-time position partners with the Payroll Coordinator to ensure accurate and timely payroll processing for biweekly, adjunct faculty, college work-study, and full-time payrolls. Thorough training through the state and the Payroll Coordinator will be provided.
Responsibilities
- Compile and input all necessary data from source documents and update employee records for payroll processing.
- Reconcile payroll and fringe benefit reporting.
- Prepare part-time wage reports and the 1500-hour report.
- Perform quarterly payroll reconciliation.
- Ensure compliance with federal and state payroll regulations and institutional policies.
- Support internal and external audits by providing required documentation.
- Maintain compliance with Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and wage/hour laws.
- Assist with year-end payroll processes.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee payroll and personnel records.
- Knowledge of basic bookkeeping/accounting principles and State and Federal tax laws as they relate to payroll.
- Ability to analyze discrepancies and interpret payroll data.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to meet strict payroll deadlines and manage competing priorities.
- Proficiency in utilizing highly technical and automated payroll systems.
- Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
- Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with others.
- High school diploma required, supplemented by basic bookkeeping/accounting courses and computer classes. An equivalent combination of training and experience may substitute.
Preferred Qualifications
- Payroll experience in a higher education setting.
- Payroll experience in a state employment setting.
- Experience with ERP/payroll systems (e.g., Banner, PeopleSoft, or similar).
Schedule
Monday through Friday, 7:45 AM to 4:30 PM, up to 29 hours per week.
Pay
$16.83 per hour.
Some travel may be required. This position is not eligible for telework.
