PT - Maintenance Worker - Refuse

About the role

This position performs work involving manual labor and physically demanding unskilled and limited semi-skilled tasks. Works as a part-time employee within the Refuse Division supporting the safe and efficient daily operation of the Green Waste Facility.

Responsibilities

• Operate log splitters, woodchippers, chainsaws, weed trimmers, pressure washers, air compressors, cart washers, wash-bay equipment, and other equipment used by the Refuse Division.
• Perform daily equipment inspections and routine preventive maintenance; report equipment deficiencies and repair needs.
• Safely load, unload, process, move, and stock green-waste products.
• Maintain facility grounds, work areas, tools, and equipment in a clean, safe, and organized condition.
• Provide courteous and professional customer service to residents and visitors; assist customers with Green Waste Facility services and products.
• Operate the computerized point-of-sale system and cash register; accurately receive and process cash and credit-card transactions; balance and reconcile the daily cash drawer; maintain accurate sales and inventory records.
• Follow OSHA requirements, City and departmental safety policies, and use required personal protective equipment.
• Work safely around customers, vehicles, moving equipment, and powered machinery.

Requirements

• Valid Utah Driver’s License.
• Some knowledge of tools used in maintenance and solid-waste operations and of precautions necessary to work safely around mechanized equipment.
• Ability to safely operate, or learn to operate, equipment and powered tools.
• Ability to learn computerized point-of-sale and record-keeping systems; accurately handle and account for money; and carry out written and verbal instructions.
• Strong customer-service skills, effective communication, ability to work independently and as part of a team, and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.

Qualifications

• Completion of twelfth grade is preferred.
• Experience operating log splitters, woodchippers, chainsaws, weed trimmers, pressure washers, air compressors, cart washers, wash-bay equipment, or similar equipment is preferred.
• Experience in cash handling and customer service is preferred.

Pay

$20.00 per hour.

Schedule

Part-time employment, up to 29 hours per week; Saturdays required.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

• Work environment is primarily outdoors, exposing the employee to moderate to very loud noises, wet or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, high and precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, and vibrations.
• Travel among worksites is required, exposing the worker to hazards incident to travel by vehicle.
• Heavy work requiring exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Visual ability to see clearly at close (less than 20 inches) and far (20 feet or more) distances, identify and distinguish colors, observe an area that can be seen up and down or left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point, judge distances and spatial relationships, and adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.
• Physical abilities required: standing, walking, sitting, using hands and fingers to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, talking, hearing, and smelling.

Additional Requirements

• Successful applicant must pass a criminal-history background check.
• Driver license report (MVR) will be obtained by the Human Resources division.
