About the role

As a licensed Psychiatrist, you will ensure patient treatment is individualized, integrated, comprehensive, and ongoing. The position focuses on diagnostic clarity and medication management for patients requiring psychiatric and/or addiction medication. You will also conduct 5150 assessments and triage alongside other non-medical Behavioral Health staff. Services are provided at two of St. John’s Primary Care Medical Clinics in South Los Angeles.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and evaluate patient data and/or tests to establish diagnoses and prescribe medication for mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders.
  • Diagnose and manage medications for patients needing psychiatric and/or addiction treatment.
  • Provide individualized, integrated, and comprehensive assessment-driven treatment tailored to the patient’s needs and readiness for change.
  • Perform patient safety assessments and triage in accordance with customary standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Create and update treatment plans, and participate in case conferences.
  • Collaborate with primary care physicians, psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, and other professionals to discuss treatment plans and progress, including patient discharge plans.
  • Complete accurate and thorough patient charting, ensuring compliance with regulatory and St. John’s requirements.
  • Attend meetings, trainings, and other work-related events as required.
  • Work evening and/or weekend hours as needed to fulfill duties and responsibilities (exempt position).
  • Perform other duties as assigned or modified based on business needs.

Requirements

  • Medical degree (MD) in Psychiatry required.
  • Active CA Medical License and DEA Certificate.
  • BLS and PALS certified.
  • Board certified or board eligible within three years of residency training.
  • In good standing with all relevant California or other state licensing/certification boards.
  • Experience assessing and treating multi-diagnosed individuals (e.g., HIV, psychiatric illness, addiction, and medical illness).
  • Experience integrating behavioral health care into primary medical care.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with multi-diagnosed populations in a medical setting.
  • Familiarity with evidence-based treatments (e.g., motivational interviewing, harm reduction, contingency management, cognitive behavioral therapy, stage of change model, addiction medication interventions).
  • Experience working with individuals burdened by various forms of addiction (e.g., alcohol, drugs, food, sex, gambling).
  • Comfort collaborating with non-medical Behavioral Health staff.
  • Experience with addiction medications.
  • Comfort conducting staff trainings on psychiatric medications, differential diagnosis, and addiction medication.
  • Proficiency with Electronic Health Records (EHR) and basic computer skills.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English (verbal and written).

Additional Requirements

  • Reliable transportation and flexibility to travel between Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Riverside Counties as needed.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends for community events.
