About the role

The Student Health Center (SHC) provides high-quality, affordable health care and health education for the students of Cal State LA to preserve and enhance their potential for academic success and personal development. Under the direction of the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), the Psychiatrist delivers compassionate, culturally competent psychiatric care to students and participates in professional and departmental activities.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate and diagnose mental health problems; order and interpret diagnostic tests as needed.
• Prescribe medication when indicated and provide follow-up treatment.
• Counsel patients and deliver mental-health crisis intervention and management.
• Refer to and consult with other professionals and providers.
• Provide consultation and expert opinion to CAPS and SHC staff.
• Collaborate with CAPS colleagues in patient care and participate in the SHC’s continuous quality-improvement activities.
• Diagnose psychiatric conditions according to DSM criteria; perform clinical evaluations, intake assessments, and appropriate tests.
• Develop and document treatment plans, Problem Lists, and Medication Lists in the SHC Electronic Health Record.
• Facilitate continuity of care and maintain strict patient confidentiality.
• Advise staff on appropriate community resources for patients needing long-term counseling or psychiatric care.
• Provide counseling for patients concerning their psychiatric condition.
• Participate in Quality Assurance activities and case conferences with CAPS.
• Follow professional practice guidelines and observe the ethics and standards of the American Psychiatric Association and the California Medical Association.
• Assist CAPS and SHC in developing and implementing campus mental-health care processes.
• Deliver therapeutic modalities such as motivational interviewing, CBT techniques, supportive psychotherapy, and psycho-educational groups.
• Provide emergency/disaster care during campus disasters.

Requirements

• Graduation from a medical school and completion of one or more ACGME-accredited residency programs and/or fellowships in a specialty appropriate to the role.
• Valid California medical license, current board certification in an ABMS or AOA specialty/subspecialty, valid DEA registration for prescribing controlled substances, and current CPR/AED certification.
• Thorough knowledge of psychiatric principles and methods, diagnosis and treatment of common medical disorders, emergency assessment and response, and applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
• Ability to serve as a mentor and resource consultant for health-center personnel and to establish effective working relationships with medical practitioners, students, faculty, and staff.
• Demonstrated interest and/or ability to work in a multicultural/multiethnic environment.
• Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check).
• Residency in the State of California upon date of hire.

Desired Qualifications

• Prior/current affiliation with a hospital or outpatient clinic.
• Experience working in a student health services setting and strong interest in college-age patients.
• Experience with electronic health recording systems.

Pay

$13,732 – $26,726 per month (budgeted hiring range: $21,667 – $24,167 per month).

Schedule

Full-time, exempt classification. Monday–Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with alternating Fridays off. Hybrid option available.
