Duties Description
Psychiatrists are essential to providing mental health services to the people OMH serves. They provide comprehensive and recovery-oriented psychiatric treatment services built on principles of effective, measurable, and accountable care. As medical doctors, psychiatrists are responsible for ensuring that all services are integrated to promote mental and physical health and recovery. Additionally, since psychopharmacology has become an integral component of modern mental health treatment, psychiatrists serve as primary prescribers.
Assistant Psychiatrists assist in providing psychiatric care and treatment services to individuals under the direct supervision of a licensed psychiatrist or physician.
Psychiatrists 1 diagnose, treat, prescribe, and provide psychiatric care and treatment services to assigned individuals under the direction of a higher-level psychiatrist or physician.
Psychiatrists 2 independently diagnose, treat, prescribe, and provide psychiatric care and treatment services to assigned individuals; provide clinical supervision and guidance to lower-level psychiatrists, physicians, and/or other medical providers; and may manage care and treatment services for an assigned facility, unit, or program.
Minimum Qualifications
- Psychiatrist 1: License and current registration to practice medicine in New York State, and completion of a training program in psychiatry approved by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).
- Psychiatrist 2: License and current registration to practice medicine in New York State, and certification in psychiatry approved by the ABPN.
- OR Candidates from within State Service can be considered for a competitive class appointment if they have one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service in a title eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.

- This position is at Central New York Psychiatric Center's Mid-State Satellite Unit located on the grounds of Mid-State Correctional Facility in Onieda County.

- If appointed you may be required to become an enrolled Medicare provider; obtain and provide to your employer a National Provider Identifier (NPI) number issued by the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES); and otherwise actively participate to the degree necessary to allow for your services to be billed through Medicare and Medicaid. If you are appointed and you lose the ability to bill through Medicare and Medicaid, you may be terminated from your employment.
- Licenses and Certifications: Loss of license or limited permit to practice medicine in New York State or board certification, if required, may result in removal from your position.
- Some positions may require additional credentials or a background check to verify your identity.
