Position Description

The Fresno County Department of Behavioral Health invites applications for the position of Psychiatric Technician III. Incumbents perform responsible nursing and therapeutic services in the care and treatment of adults and children with mental health disorders. Applicants may be required to work shifts as assigned, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

About the Role

Incumbents perform responsible nursing and therapeutic services in the care and treatment of adults and children with mental health disorders. They interview and screen persons seeking mental health services, assist in determining if persons served should be admitted, prepare and give medication, observe and document consumer behavior, and assist in various therapeutic activities.

Responsibilities

  • Interviews and screens persons seeking mental health services.
  • Affords assistance in determining if persons served should be admitted (voluntarily or involuntarily) to the Acute Psychiatric Unit.
  • Refers persons served to mental health programs or to other service agencies providing mental health services.
  • Performs mental health screening in emergency situations.
  • Prepares and gives medication intramuscularly and orally under supervision.
  • Observes, records, and reports reaction of persons served as part of the team approach to treatment.
  • Applies techniques to safeguard life and health of the person served and others.
  • Admits persons served to department services.
  • Takes and records temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration.
  • Orients person served to the ward or other department services.
  • Makes rounds with doctors and assists with treatments as directed.
  • Assists nurses with difficult persons served when directed.
  • Assists and supervises persons served in physical care, hygiene, and grooming.
  • Helps provide a therapeutic climate for persons served by listening to and socializing with them.
  • May record doctor's orders.
  • May review the work of Psychiatric Technician I/II's and Behavioral Health Workers.

Requirements

  • Two years of full-time, paid work experience as a Licensed Psychiatric Technician.
  • Possession of a valid license as a Psychiatric Technician issued by the State of California Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technician Examiners.
  • Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of medical and psychiatric terminology.
  • Knowledge of basic pharmacology.
  • Knowledge of physical, emotional, and social needs of adults and children with mental health disorders.
  • Knowledge of emergency medical care and triage.

  • To observe and document consumer behavior, reactions, and progress.
  • To work effectively in stressful, emotional, and confrontational situations.
  • To assess and react rapidly to emergency situations.

  • To establish and maintain effective working relationships at all organizational levels as well as with other agencies and the public.
  • To display and maintain a high degree of maturity, integrity, loyalty, accountability, and good judgment.

Selection Process

Pursuant to Fresno County Personnel Rule 4 - Selection Process, applicants may be required to complete an examination process and successful candidates will be placed on an employment list effective for a minimum of 3 months and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur. Should a recruitment be open on a continuous basis, eligibles shall be certified in the order they are received not to exceed the maximum certification the department is entitled to. Tentative Initial Interview Date: June 5, 2026 Subsequent interviews will be conducted approximately two weeks following candidate certification to the hiring department.
