Psychiatric Registered Nurse II
About the role
Vermont Psychiatric Care Hospital (VPCH) is a 25-bed, newly built, state-of-the-art facility dedicated to improving the health and well-being of Vermont’s most vulnerable populations through mental health care. This position is open to all State employees and external applicants.
Responsibilities
- Function as a fully integrated member of a multidisciplinary team providing psychiatric nursing care.
- Work in a clinical setting with potential exposure to communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens, potentially physically and verbally violent patient populations, and other stressful situations.
- May be required to work evenings, nights, weekends, and extended shifts as needed.
Requirements
- Possession of, or eligibility for, licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Vermont OR eligibility to practice in the state of Vermont via a multi-state license.
- Two (2) years or more of professional nursing experience OR one (1) year or more of experience as a Registered Nurse I with the State of Vermont.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Specialty areas: Acute Inpatient Psychiatric, Psychiatric, Geriatric, Pediatric/Adolescent.
Skills
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Knowledge of psychiatric nursing practices and procedures.

Pay
The starting rate may be negotiable based on experience and qualifications. As of July 12, 2026, the step 1 rate for pay grade 23 will be $42.08 per hour and the step 15 rate will be $65.70 per hour.
Schedule
Overtime work is required to maintain minimum staffing levels and for unannounced regulatory inspections and is considered a condition of employment. The ability to work overtime when required is an essential function of this job class.
