About the Role
Provides advanced psychiatric and medical care for individuals and populations with complex nursing and mental health needs under limited supervision of a South Carolina licensed psychiatrist. Works independently with minimal supervision, diagnosing and treating patients according to established protocols, and using prescriptive authority.
Responsibilities
- Establish and monitor standards for clinical practice within the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC).
- Monitor medication and conduct psychiatric assessments.
- Participate in treatment teams and complete health histories of inmates.
- Conduct suicide and crisis intervention assessments.
- Perform all admissions procedures for a designated caseload of mentally ill patients, including family history and complete physical examinations.
- Distinguish between normal and abnormal clinical findings.
- Attend probate court hearings.
- Order and accurately interpret diagnostic testing, including radiologic and lab studies.
Requirements
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing at the master's or doctoral level, including clinical experience.
- Certification as a Nurse Practitioner by the SC Board of Nursing or eligibility for licensure (must be obtained within 6 months of employment).
- Three years of active clinical practice as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in correctional healthcare, community mental health centers, or emergency psychiatric care.
