Psychiatric Associate - Young Adult Inpatient

Fairview is seeking a Psychiatric Associate to join our Young Adult Inpatient Mental Health unit, Station 6AE. This unit serves adults ages 18-25 with a diverse patient population, including those at risk for self-harm or suicide, individuals with thought disorders, first-time diagnoses, and co-occurring medical issues. Located on the West Bank of the Mississippi River near downtown Minneapolis, this role offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced psychiatric associates.

About the role

This position is approved for 48 hours every two weeks, rotating between day (7:00 AM - 3:30 PM) and evening (3:00 PM - 11:30 PM) shifts. You will work 8-hour shifts, including every other weekend on the evening shift, with a variable schedule. The Psychiatric Associate delivers patient care and promotes a therapeutic environment under the direction of a Registered Nurse to achieve treatment goals.

Responsibilities

• Maintains safety of patients and staff through visual observation, safety checks, room/belonging/unit searches, and de-escalation techniques, including physical intervention as trained.
• Actively participates in milieu management and collaborates with the treatment team.
• Performs basic patient daily living routines and procedures according to the treatment plan.
• Demonstrates knowledge of mental health diagnoses, therapeutic interactions, and milieu management.
• Conducts educational programming for individuals and/or patient groups as outlined in the treatment plan.
• Responds to emergency situations per policy and training.
• Participates in the treatment team’s mission, goals, and plans as a member of the multi-disciplinary team.
• Communicates verbally in a timely, thorough, and professional manner.
• Maintains knowledge of Behavioral Services policies, procedures, and updates.
• Provides light to medium assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), including hygiene, grooming, dressing, oral care, toileting, eating, and mobility support.
• Assists with supplies, setup, and patient direction for basic care routines.
• Provides mobility support appropriate to training (e.g., gait belts, wheelchair assistance).

Requirements

• 2 years of experience in mental health, healthcare, or a school setting (e.g., NA, NST, PCA, behavioral tech).
• Demonstrated experience working with vulnerable individuals or high-acuity behavioral needs.
• Basic Life Support certification (American Heart Association or Red Cross).

Qualifications (Preferred)

• Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Sociology, Human Services, Health Care, Social Work, Criminal Justice, or a related field.
• Experience in inpatient, ED, behavioral health, EMT/paramedic, emergency medical services, or other high-acuity settings (e.g., schools, residential treatment facilities, group homes).

Pay

The posted compensation range corresponds to the minimum and maximum pay rates outlined in your union agreement for this job classification. Individual pay within this range may be influenced by factors such as FTE, skills, knowledge, educational background, and qualifying experience as specified in the contract. If eligible, a sign-on bonus may be offered based on the approved program at the time of the offer.
