About the Role
Fairview is seeking a Psychiatric Associate to join the Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT) on the West Bank of the Mississippi River near downtown Minneapolis. This position is SEIU benefit eligible and operates on a night shift (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM) with 12-hour shifts, totaling 60 hours every two weeks, including every third weekend on a variable schedule.
Responsibilities
- Maintains safety of patients and staff through:
- Conducting safety checks via visual observation and documentation.
- Performing room, belonging, and unit searches.
- Responding to and participating in patient de-escalation, including physical intervention as trained.
- Actively participating in milieu management with treatment team collaboration.
- Performs basic patient daily living routines and procedures according to the treatment plan.
- Demonstrates knowledge of signs/symptoms of mental health diagnoses, therapeutic interactions, and milieu management.
- Conducts educational programming with individuals and/or patient groups as per the treatment plan.
- Responds to emergency situations as trained and according to policy.
- Participates in the treatment team’s mission, goals, and plans.
- Acts as a member of the multi-disciplinary therapeutic team.
- Exhibits verbal communication in a timely, thorough, and professional manner.
- Possesses knowledge of current issues, changes, and updates in Behavioral Services policies and procedures.
- Provides ADLs and physical support, including:
- Light to medium assistance with hygiene, grooming, dressing, oral care, toileting, eating, and mobility.
- Assistance with supplies, setup, and patient direction for basic care routines.
- Mobility support appropriate to training (e.g., gait belts, wheelchair assistance).
Requirements
- 3–5 years of experience caring for patients with primary mental health and/or substance use disorders in an acute care setting (inpatient, ED, etc.).
- 2 years of experience in mental health, healthcare, or a school setting (e.g., NA, NST, PCA, behavioral tech).
- Demonstrated experience working with vulnerable individuals or high-acuity behavioral needs.
- Basic Life Support certification (American Heart Association or Red Cross).
- BERT training to be completed prior to the end of orientation.
Preferred Qualifications
- B.S./B.A. in Psychology, Sociology, Human Services, Health Care, Social Work, Criminal Justice, or a related field.
- Experience in inpatient, ED, behavioral health, EMT/paramedic, emergency medical services, or other high-acuity settings (e.g., schools, residential treatment facilities, group homes).
- De-escalation/Non-escalation Training.
- Workplace Conflict Management Training.
- BERT Training.
- Experience in Emergency Department, Mental Health, and/or Chemical Dependence Units.
