PS Genetic Counselor

Job Summary

The Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Genetic Counselor to provide genetic counseling services and support clinical genetic projects and research efforts. The position focuses on one of three areas: Leukodystrophy and Epilepsy, Inpatient Neurology, and General Neurology.

Responsibilities

• Performs genetic risk assessments by collecting and evaluating medical and family histories.
• Analyzes and interprets information from patient, medical records, and resource materials.
• Evaluates complex medical and genetic literature and incorporates it into clinical practice.
• Explains testing options, procedures, test results, and their implications; performs psychosocial assessment during genetic consultation and provides grief and crisis counseling as needed.
• Works with the health care team in developing and implementing the care plan.
• Advises patients and families regarding financial and community resources.
• Evaluates outcomes and modifies testing or medical recommendations.
• Facilitates involvement of treatment team members, timely reports, and scheduling of team conferences.
• Assists with prior authorization, working with families and payors to ensure appropriate testing is ordered.
• Participates in newborn screening follow-up, including counseling newly identified families and reporting information back to the department of health for conditions referred to pediatric neurology.
• Supports other at-need divisions as requested, with primary placement within the Division of Neurology.

Qualifications

• Current license as a Genetic Counselor in the State of Utah.
• Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
• Possession of preferred licensure to practice in a clinical field.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands
