PS Cardiovascular Perfusionist

About the Role

The University of Utah Hospital performs approximately 1000+ cardiac cases per year, including CABG, valve procedures, LVAD, RVAD, heart and lung transplantation, NRP, complex aortic cases, Pulmonary Thromboendarterectomy, adult congenital cases, and more. Perfusion services also cover auto-transfusion, component therapy, coagulation testing, TAVR’s, and HIPEC, with minimal ECMO and occasional Intra-aortic Balloon Pump involvement.

This role is affiliated with the University of Utah School of Medicine, offering opportunities to teach and train perfusion students through its Masters level Perfusion Program. Clinical perfusionists will participate in student education and may teach didactic courses.

On-call duties are shared among the team, including weeknights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

• Operate perfusion equipment during cardiac and related procedures.
• Provide auto-transfusion, component therapy, and coagulation testing services.
• Support complex cases such as LVAD, RVAD, transplants, and aortic surgeries.
• Participate in the clinical education of perfusion students and may teach didactic courses.
• Respond to on-call duties within 45 minutes of notification.
• Maintain equipment, supplies, and adherence to safety protocols.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited school of perfusion or equivalent training and certification by the ABCP.
• Current certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) or in process of certification.
• Good physical and mental health; ability to push heavy equipment and lift/move supplies.
• Ability to work in high-stress, emergent situations and maintain solid interpersonal relationships.
• Compliance with continuing education requirements set by ABCP, state, and employer.
• Ability to work unpredictable hours, including call responsibilities.
• Exposure to blood, blood products, infectious diseases, and anesthetic agents.

Qualifications

• Completion of a formal academic training program in cardiovascular perfusion.
• Current ABCP certification.
• Patient-sensitive role requiring immunization per CDC standards and hospital policy (limited exemptions for medical/religious reasons).
• Demonstrated ability to perform essential job functions, with care appropriate to the population served.

Pay

Pay rate range: $75,900 to $172,372 per year.
