About the opportunity

The WVU Personal Rapid Transit System (PRT) is a fully automated public transportation network comprising five passenger stations, 73 driverless vehicles, two maintenance facilities, nine miles of dedicated guideway, and extensive ancillary equipment. The PRT Technician I (mechanical) position involves providing mechanical expertise and performing maintenance and repairs on all PRT systems at a semi-skilled level. This role operates various shifts, including weekends, and works both indoors and outdoors, often in challenging weather conditions.

What You'll Do

  • Perform entry-level mechanical tasks such as hydraulics, pneumatics, suspension, steering, brakes, doors, modules, etc.
  • Maintain and repair PRT guideway structures, stations, buildings, fences, and supporting equipment.
  • Conduct scheduled maintenance and general repairs (e.g., steel, masonry, painting, cleaning).
  • Support the maintenance team by performing various support activities, including operating specialized equipment and communicating with others.
  • Participate in PRT vehicle recoveries and train as a MOCU (Manual Override Control Unit) operator.
  • Interpret maintenance manuals, schematics, and drawings, and communicate effectively with team members.
  • Open and close passenger stations, make recommendations for hardware and procedural changes, and perform minor auto body repairs and painting.

Qualifications

  • At least an Associate's degree in mechanical or electrical systems or equivalent experience.
  • Valid US driver's license.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, tools, and safety practices relevant to mechanical systems.
  • Experience with troubleshooting, basic repairs, and maintenance procedures on complex mechanical equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of electric and gas welding.
  • First aid and CPR certification.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, particularly with the public.
  • Good physical condition, including vision, hearing, speech, and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects over 75 lbs.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and perform tasks requiring physical coordination.

  • Standing, walking, lifting, bending, pushing, and working in tight areas.

Requirements

  • Valid US driver's license.
  • Pass a mandatory (DOT) drug test as part of the hiring process.
