PRT Guideway Technician - Transportation & Parking

About the role

The Transportation and Parking unit of the Division of Facilities and Services at West Virginia University is seeking applications for a PRT Guideway Technician. This position helps to maintain the PRT’s safe and reliable transportation of WVU students, faculty, staff, visitors, and the community of the Morgantown area, with 5 passenger stations, 8+ miles of main guideway (GW) structure and two maintenance facilities. The GW systems include mechanical, structural, and electrical systems along its entire length, requiring regular preventive maintenance and repairs. The most maintenance intensive of these systems is the Guideway Heating System (GWHS), consisting of four (4) separate hydronic heating plants that utilize a glycol solution and embedded piping grids to heat the GW running surface. This allows for safe vehicle operation in the winter months.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a wide variety of tasks that involve installation, repair, maintenance, and cleaning of the guideway systems.
  • Provides daily guideway heating status information, input for work plans and guideway heating system repairs and modifications.
  • Performs field maintenance and operations efforts for the MPRT guideway heating system and associated structures.
  • Provides continual inspection of guideway systems to ensure maintenance is completed on schedule, and recommends repair actions.
  • Makes independent decisions in real time to ensure proper safety procedures, equipment, and personal protective equipment are used while performing job duties.
  • Affords assistance with requisitions for parts, supplies, etc. from PRT Stores and WVU Procurement, and has direct contact with material vendors and service agencies.
  • Responsible for reporting guideway heating system leaks to PRT management and WVU's Environmental Health and Safety department (EH&S).
  • Works on-call during periods of inclement weather and may need to report to work during University closures for emergency repairs or operation of the guideway heating system.
  • Assists in vehicle recovery efforts and other PRT maintenance activities as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Valid Driver's License
  • Mandatory Drug Testing
  • DOT FTA Background Check

Qualifications

  • A High School diploma or GED
  • One of the following:
    • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in industrial plumbing system repairs, metal fabrication, mechanical system operation/troubleshooting, installation/operation/repair of hydronic heating systems, and/or general HVAC concepts and applications
    • Completion of an associate degree in building maintenance or other craft trade
    • Completion of a 2-year accredited vocational craft trades program

  • Comprehend related Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Perform multiple activities necessary to efficiently and safely perform required duties.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow staff members.
  • Maintain accurate basic records, and complete brief forms and reports clearly and accurately.
  • Detect unusual, hazardous, or emergency situations, and take appropriate action within prescribed guidelines.
  • Gain knowledge of policies and procedures pertaining to the work, including the PRT operating processes, station and guideway layout, and the actions required in unusual or emergency situations.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of commercial natural gas fired boiler operation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems, including pumps, popping, and various flow control devices.
  • Knowledge and experience with materials, tools, and safety practices of the plumbing, mechanical and electrical trades.
  • Knowledge and techniques of electric/gas welding and general metal fabrications.
  • Read and interpret schematics and drawings.

Pay

Pay Grade: PG 14
Hours: 10 pm - 6 am (summer hours: 6a-2p)
