Provider Nurse

About the role

Collaborates with and provides professional nursing support to NHO Providers in the care of patients with oncology or hematological conditions following established standards and practices. A specialized oncology nurse who attains proper judgement and competence to provide patient-centered care under the direct supervision of the physician. Assists Physician/Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in the development of personalized patient care plans to promote the safe delivery of chemotherapy and biotherapy treatments. Works within the scope of licensure as a registered or licensed practical nurse, applying evidence-based nursing practices consistent with national standards and supporting quality outcomes.

Works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to meet the physical, psychosocial, educational, and spiritual needs of the patient and family, contributes to and implements the plan of care. Maintains competency in all clinic standards while supporting NHO mission and core values: Honesty – Openness – Positivity – Elevate.

Responsibilities

• Provides general nursing care to patients within scope of licensure.
• Utilizes the nursing process—assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation—to facilitate continuing healthcare opportunities to individuals, families, and community.
• Delegates and provides supervision of LPNs and clinical support staff.
• Assists with flow of patients to avoid delays for providers and undue waiting for patients.
• Provides direct patient care to prepare patients for examination, assists with procedures, assures completion of provider orders, performs assessments, central line maintenance, oral medication compliance, and IV medication administration.
• Employs critical thinking skills and knowledge-based nursing judgement.
• Demonstrates knowledge in anticancer therapies and treatment regimens, including indications, dosing, calculations, premedication, and supportive cares.
• Carries out the treatment plan to completion as directed by the physician, adhering to safety standards with attention to error prevention.
• Collaborates with the healthcare team utilizing communication tools to provide focused and concise information, execute orders with readback, and assure accuracy and appropriateness.
• Assists patients and other healthcare entities with inquiries regarding changes in patients’ health status and follow-up activities, including providing information on laboratory results, diagnostic tests, scheduling, and medications.
• Teaches and counsels patients and families concerning health assessment, how to evaluate symptoms, medications, effectiveness of treatment, how and when to notify the healthcare team.
• Follows practice standards to ensure consistency and effectiveness promoting positive outcomes and access to healthcare.
• Demonstrates effective and respectful communication with patients, families, and the healthcare team, approaching patient care with empathy and compassion.
• Guides patients through the complexities of their diagnosis, supportive services, and the healthcare system.
• Identifies learning needs of the patient, educates by adapting to the learning style, and utilizes the teach-back method.
• Assists staff in clinic quality improvement measures and clinic standards of practice such as Quality Oncology Practice Initiatives (QOPI), Oncology Nurse Society (ONS), and National Institute of Safety & Health (NIOSH).
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Nebraska required.
• Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required.
• Oncology Certification highly encouraged when qualified.
• One year of nursing experience; experience working with oncology patients preferred.

Physical Requirements

Characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force consistently to move objects including the human body. Ability to assist adult patients to exam tables and maintain patient mobility including walker and wheelchair assistance. Exposure to blood, waste, bodily fluids, communicable diseases, and hazardous drugs while utilizing appropriate safety standards.
