Protection & Control Field Service Engineer/Associate/Technician
This posting is for a Protection & Control Field Services Engineer, Engineering Associate, or Technician position based in the Valdosta Transmission Maintenance Center. The role is non-exempt and pay/level will be determined based on the successful candidate's qualifications, education, and experience.
About the Role
The successful candidate will be responsible for Protection & Control (P&C) Field Services activities in the Southern Transmission Maintenance Area (TMA). Safety and quality are paramount. The role involves learning and applying switching procedures, safety measures, and planning/completing projects safely, efficiently, and on schedule without service interruptions.
Requirements
Education & Experience
- 4-year Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, or
- 4-year BS Degree in Engineering Technology, or
- Professional Engineering License, or
- 2-year technical degree in electrical maintenance, or
- Equivalent applicable experience (e.g., Electrician, Technician, Wireman)
Preferred Experience
- P&C Field Services experience
- Electric power utility transmission construction, maintenance, or operations experience
- Experience related to P&C Applications, Design, Construction, Major Electrical Equipment, or Project Management
- Experience standing by to respond to abnormal conditions 24/7
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of 3-phase power systems, AC/DC Protection & Control Schemes, and Fault Analysis
- Familiarity with test equipment such as voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, communications instruments, and computerized relay test sets
- Ability to communicate across multiple work groups, including customers, employees, and leadership
Additional Requirements
- Ability to solve problems and make decisions while managing projects with multiple priorities
- Valid driver’s license
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office products (Word, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Participation in callout rotation, including responding to outages or abnormal conditions outside normal work hours (weekends/holidays)
- Occasional overnight travel
- Safety-sensitive position subject to pre-employment screenings to determine fitness for duty
- Hybrid position requiring:
- Physical ability to operate manual switches
- Work in outdoor environments with exposure to elements
- Periods of office-based work
- Must live in or be willing to relocate within a reasonable distance to the Valdosta TMC and Southern TMA coverage area
- Must pass Southern Company background check, drug screen, and NERC Background check
Responsibilities
- Commissioning, testing, maintaining, and troubleshooting protective relaying, controls, and communication equipment
- Completing assigned tasks without service interruptions, including isolating equipment to meet quality, schedule, and budget targets
- Coordinating activities with multiple internal and external stakeholders
- Serving as first responder to investigate power interruptions and equipment alarms
- Developing and using safe, efficient work practices to prevent safety and operational incidents
- Following formal written requirements
- Conducting job briefings to identify and mitigate safety and operational risks
- Isolating hazards and damaged equipment during emergencies to restore service safely and efficiently
