About the role
The Propulsion Technician supports the development, testing, integration, and maintenance of propulsion systems critical to the performance of Sceye’s stratospheric platforms. This individual works hands-on with mechanical, fluid, and propulsion components, ensuring systems meet stringent safety, quality, and performance standards.
Responsibilities
- Assemble, install, maintain, and troubleshoot propulsion systems, including thrusters, propellers, actuators, gearing, composites and support structures.
- Perform structural testing, blade balancing, and functional checks of propulsion subsystems.
- Create wiring and harnesses required in propulsion sub-system builds based on technical drawings and schematics.
- Support propulsion system integration into HAPS frames and related ground support equipment.
- Follow detailed work instructions, technical drawings, schematics, and test procedures.
- Conduct safe handling and storage of hazardous materials.
- Support propulsion system ground tests and flight operations, including pre-flight and post-flight inspections.
- Document work performed with thorough notes, photographs, and maintenance records.
- Aid engineering teams in modifying designs based on test results and operational feedback.
- Adhere to all safety standards, protocols, and aerospace quality requirements.
- Participate in troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support company objectives.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Associate degree or technical certification in aerospace technology, mechanical systems, or related field preferred.
- 2+ years experience working on propulsion, fluid systems, mechanical assemblies, or aerospace systems.
- Hands-on experience with mechanical fabrication, fitting installation, wire harness assembly and mechanical testing.
- Proficiency with precision tools (e.g., torque wrenches, pressure gauges, calipers).
- Strong understanding of mechanical drawings and schematics.
- Knowledge of safe handling practices for composite parts and assemblies.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic, and team-driven environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a detail-oriented mindset.
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Willingness and ability to travel occasionally for testing or operational support.
Preferred / Nice to Have
- Experience in aerospace (commercial spaceflight, high-altitude platforms, UAVs, aviation maintenance).
- Prior work experience with high-pressure systems.
- Prior experience working with composites.
- FAA A&P (Airframe and Powerplant) certification.
- Familiarity with test operations and data acquisition systems.
