Salary range: $21.8623–$24.1118 per hour (Step 1 and Step 3 of a 7-step pay scale; final salary dependent on education, experience, and training).
Schedule
- Monday–Thursday, 6:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m., or
- Tuesday–Friday, 6:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Responsibilities
- Handle confidential and sensitive information without unauthorized disclosure.
- Secure, transport, categorize, release, log, tag, and photograph property and evidence for the Police Department.
- Check serial numbers on items received to ascertain whether items are stolen.
- Set aside items for fingerprinting.
- Dispose and release property from the property system in accordance with applicable laws, including auction, conversion, and destruction.
- Determine ownership of found or unclaimed property when possible.
- Input various detailed records into a computer terminal, maintain accurate and detailed data, verify accuracy of information, and update information.
- Release vehicles from the impound lot.
- Coordinate property and evidence functions with other law enforcement jurisdictions when required.
- Make inquiries into the NCIC and CJIN regarding information on vehicle registration, driver’s licenses, wanted persons, and criminal history records in accordance with the NCIC operations manual.
- Schedule appointments for attorneys and defendants to view videos.
- Show videos, evidence, and property as necessary.
- Prepare evidence and present expert testimony in court regarding the maintenance and processing of evidence and test results and findings.
- Process requests for evidence related to discovery for attorneys.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Specialized training beyond high school that can be obtained in one year or less.
- At least three years of related work experience.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Must become a certified CJIN/NCIC operator within six months of employment and maintain the certification throughout employment.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug test and a thorough background investigation, including a federal fingerprint-based criminal history check.
- Must possess a valid Montana driver’s license or obtain one within thirty days of employment; a clean driving record is required.
- After one year of training in proper evidence handling and storage techniques, must become certified as a Property and Evidence Specialist through the International Association of Property and Evidence; promotion to Property/Evidence Tech II follows certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Inventory/audit experience.
