About the role

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) seeks a dynamic individual to oversee daily operations of a mid to large sized DNR property. This role requires a combination of administrative oversight, resource management, and public engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of a DNR property in the absence of the property manager.
  • Assist with planning, coordinating, implementing, and directing natural resource management, cultural/historic resource management, fish & wildlife management, fish culture, and timber management practices and procedures.
  • Assist with planning, coordinating, implementing, and directing public use activities on the property, including hunting, wildlife viewing, camping, hiking, swimming, boating, biking, off-road vehicle driving, etc.
  • Direct, supervise, inspect, and monitor maintenance, construction projects, and repairs.
  • Develop, implement, and track a biennial budget and administer operating, preventive maintenance, and rehabilitation funds.
  • Represent the property and department with local partnerships and organizations.
  • Assist with overseeing and evaluating interpretive services, including naturalist, educational programming, and visitor center operations.
  • Ensure the safe operation and maintenance of heavy vehicles, equipment, and facilities.
  • Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood.
  • Evaluate the performance of employees and ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources, Fish & Wildlife Management, Forestry, Biology, Business Administration, Recreation, or a closely related field.
  • Willingness to travel with reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to live onsite when housing is available.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders.
  • Working knowledge of construction methods, industry standards, and equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of recreation management, forestry, and fish & wildlife science.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Organizational skills and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to delegate tasks and provide feedback.

Qualifications

  • Ability to work “on call” 24 hours a day.
  • Experience in supervising and training a diverse range of employees.
  • Knowledge of current and historical construction methods and industry standards.
  • Ability to operate and maintain construction equipment, commercial mowing equipment, light trucks, and other vehicles.
  • Experience in managing budgets and financial records.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Pay

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $53,222.00 but may be commensurate with education and work experience. Use our Compensation Calculator to view the total compensation package.

Schedule

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work.
