About the Role
The Afterschool Boxing Specialist works directly with youth from diverse backgrounds to provide a safe, responsible, and well-supervised afterschool program while acting as a positive adult role model. The specialist provides leadership and establishes a structured program to give participants the stability and nurturing environment they need for growth and success. The role primarily supports the Central Park PAL Boxing program, offering coaching, mentorship, and a well-rounded program including academic support.
Responsibilities
- Deliver developmentally appropriate activities (academics and enrichment) that address grant objectives and goals for youth in the program.
- Become familiar with, select, prepare, write new, and implement hands-on and project-based lesson plans in areas such as common core, character development, STEAM, fitness, and recreation.
- Lead and supervise groups of youth and address behavior issues as they arise.
- Ensure participants engage in homework, tutoring, or other academic activities to maintain eligibility for the boxing program.
- Assist the Assistant Coordinator with reporting requirements, including collecting accurate attendance and activity participation data for youth.
- Communicate successes and challenges regarding youth to direct supervisors.
- Conduct pre- and post-surveys according to grant requirements.
- Arrive on time for scheduled shifts, staff meetings, trainings, and events.
- Serve snacks and dinner, and oversee meal times (may require a Food Handler's Permit).
- Maintain daily cleanliness of all program areas (office, classrooms, gym, kitchen, etc.).
- Work at city-sponsored events, typically held 1-2 times per month on a Friday evening or Saturday morning.
