Project Safety Manager
About the role
The Christman Company is seeking a Project Safety Manager to join their team in West Michigan. This position is based out of their Grand Rapids office and plays a key role in promoting and sustaining a positive safety culture across their project teams.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a safety leader, fostering a proactive safety culture throughout the project lifecycle.
- Provide mentorship and coaching to project teams and subcontractors on safety standards, regulations, and best practices.
- Collaborate with clients and trade partners to support safe work environments.
- Identify, evaluate, and control potential hazards in both pre-construction planning and active job sites.
- Conduct site audits, monitor safety performance, and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Investigate incidents and develop strategies to prevent recurrence.
- Track and analyze safety data to identify trends and drive continuous improvement.
- Contribute to corporate initiatives to enhance company-wide safety practices, tools, and technologies.
- Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with industry trends and certifications.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Safety, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of commercial construction safety experience; or equivalent education and experience.
- Experience working on OCIP or CCIP projects strongly preferred.
- CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) certification preferred, or ability to obtain.

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to influence and earn trust at all levels.
- Strong knowledge of federal/state safety regulations and the ability to identify and mitigate site hazards.
- Detail-oriented with analytical skills to monitor trends and evaluate performance metrics.
- Dependable, professional, and proactive with the ability to prioritize and manage competing responsibilities.
- Technically proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Work Environment and Physical Demands
- The majority of work is completed outside at the construction site and in an office trailer where the project is monitored, and daily decisions are made about construction activities.
- The position is often exposed to sounds and loud noises, such as construction equipment.
- The job requires the wearing of protective equipment when on the construction site (hardhats, safety glasses, and highly visible clothing).
- Temperatures and conditions may vary depending on the weather and seasons.
- The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
