Project Manager Water

About the role

Mott MacDonald’s water/wastewater team is actively growing its practice in New York. In this position, you will manage multiple water/wastewater projects simultaneously, with excellent potential for professional growth and collaboration across disciplines such as dams, geotechnical, energy, and transportation. The role requires strong leadership, project management, and business development experience, including generating project leads, building client relationships, and winning work. You will interact directly with clients, mentor professionals, and oversee design teams and sub-consultants.

Responsibilities

• Interact with clients and regulatory agencies.
• Provide administrative and technical management for multiple water resources, water treatment, or wastewater projects.
• Establish and review time-and-hour budgets, ensuring projects meet financial targets.
• Periodically review project schedules and progress.
• Outline complex problems and methods of approach for other engineers.
• Supervise or coordinate several varied assignments simultaneously.
• Identify potential business development opportunities with existing clients and lead the proposal process.
• Maintain client relationships post-project to secure future work.
• Plan and conduct complete projects or portions of larger projects, applying intensive/diverse knowledge of engineering principles.
• Calculate project costs and determine feasibility based on data analysis.
• Perform detailed design for municipal engineering projects, including storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water systems, and pump stations.
• Prepare engineering drawings, specifications, and other project deliverables.
• Develop project cost estimates.
• Serve as lead project engineer during construction, reviewing shop drawings, RFIs, and design clarifications.
• Lead permitting activities with local and state regulatory agencies.
• Attend project meetings, prepare agendas, and document meeting minutes.
• Coordinate with various disciplines during project execution.
• Work closely with project managers and senior design engineers to review and coordinate designs.

Requirements

• B.S. Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering (required).
• 7+ years of experience in water engineering.
• Experience working with the NYC Department of Environmental Protection and/or other city agencies (preferred).
• Experience in both design and management of water-related projects.
• Mentoring experience with less experienced engineers.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in New York (preferred) or ability to obtain one within 6 months.
• Self-starter with the ability to lead and manage people and projects.
• Commercial approach to delivering projects.
• Skilled in technical writing.

Pay

The expected salary for this position is $125,000–$153,000.

Schedule

This is a full-time, hybrid role requiring a minimum of three days per week in the office to foster collaboration. You and your manager will determine the best approach to balance flexibility with client, team, and personal commitments.
