About the Organization

Governors Island is a 172-acre island in the heart of New York Harbor, located between Lower Manhattan and the Brooklyn waterfront. Once a military base closed to the public, it now features an award-winning park, historic buildings, educational and cultural facilities, and a 22-acre National Monument managed by the National Park Service. The Trust for Governors Island is a nonprofit responsible for the redevelopment and operation of 150 acres of the Island, with a mission to inspire and serve all New Yorkers through transformative public space, arts, culture, recreation, and climate-focused research and education.

Responsibilities

  • Support all aspects of planning, leasing, and development on Governors Island to advance the Trust’s mission and financial goals.
  • Lead or assist in all phases of real estate projects, including:
    • Initial project planning, research, and modeling
    • Preparation and management of RFPs or other solicitations
    • Lease and contract negotiations
    • Funding and financing
    • Coordination of landlord and tenant improvements
  • Manage project timelines, budgets, and key issues.
  • Respond to tenant leads and inquiries, and maintain a prospect pipeline for various projects.
  • Contract and coordinate outside services such as appraisals, surveys, and studies.
  • Track project progress, performance, and milestones, and maintain organized project files.
  • Communicate clearly with prospective partners, existing tenants, Trust leadership, and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Legal, Design and Construction, Property Management, and Public Affairs departments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree in real estate, business, finance, public policy, urban planning, or a similar field preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a relevant field.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Skills

  • Proactive and self-directed, with the ability to create and maintain project momentum, demonstrate responsiveness, and manage multiple high-priority projects simultaneously.
  • Strong quantitative, financial analysis, and real estate modeling skills (MS Excel).
  • Proven ability to contribute to complex negotiations.
  • Civic-minded, with a strong commitment to advancing the Trust’s mission.
  • Experience with public space and public processes in New York City is a plus.
  • Decision-making and communication skills suitable for representing the organization externally.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to synthesize complex issues clearly.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit.

Pay

$75,000–$85,000 per year.

Schedule

In-person four days per week, remote one day per week. All positions are located on Governors Island.
