About the Role

San Francisco Public Works (Public Works) has a $453 million annual operating budget, an active $3 billion capital portfolio, and over 1,700 employees. The department designs and manages civic buildings and streets, maintains infrastructure, manages bond programs, and addresses key urban challenges with a commitment to equity and public service. There are currently two vacancies for this role within the Bureau of Project Management – Project Delivery Division – Streetscape Team.

The Project Manager I will oversee the planning, coordination, and execution of assigned capital improvement projects, including the following key initiatives:

• Under Ramp Park Project: Transform underutilized space beneath freeway structures into a vibrant public park featuring recreational amenities, plazas, public art, off-leash dog areas, safety lighting, utility connections, and urban landscaping.
• Mission Street Safety Improvements Project: Construct permanent pedestrian, streetscape, and transit infrastructure along Mission Street (Embarcadero to 3rd Street) to improve multimodal safety, transit reliability, and vehicular circulation. Upgrades include pedestrian bulb-outs, enhanced lighting, red transit lanes, traffic signal upgrades, and landscaping.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and direct all project phases, including design, procurement, and construction.
• Assemble and manage design teams and execute solicitations for professional services and construction contracts.
• Select project delivery methods and oversee design coordination, issue resolution, and regulatory approvals.
• Monitor project budgets, funding, schedules, design activities, and change orders.
• Coordinate work across multidisciplinary teams and manage construction professionals to ensure compliance with contracts, codes, and City standards.
• Serve as the primary contact for contractors, agencies, community groups, and City departments.
• Conduct onsite visits and facilitate public and stakeholder meetings.

Requirements

Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities may qualify. Typical pathways include:

• Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, or planning plus four years of relevant experience, or
• Bachelor’s degree in another field plus six years of directly related experience, or
• Eight years of relevant architectural, engineering, or construction management experience, or
• Valid California registration as a professional engineer or architect.

Pay

Annual salary range: $197,158 – $212,264.
