Project Manager - Environmental Studies (Denver)
Burns & McDonnell’s Mountain Region is seeking a Project Manager for our Environmental Services Global Practice. The role encompasses environmental studies, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) analysis, federal and state environmental permitting, local land use permitting, siting/routing studies, and state public utility commission siting, among other environmental services.

This position offers the opportunity to challenge and grow professionally within one of the industry’s leading firms. You will solve clients’ environmental and engineering issues in project planning, development, permitting, design, and remediation. The role involves enhancing and expanding our environmental studies, permitting, NEPA, and routing/siting services in the region while working with established clients across multiple markets.
Responsibilities
- Project management, team leadership, and mentoring of junior staff.
- Preparing NEPA documentation and federal/state documentation for environmental projects of all sizes.
- Leading the NEPA compliance process for Federal agencies and clients.
- Preparing local land use and development permit applications, including Colorado 1041 permitting, and representing clients at land use approval hearings.
- Preparing routing and siting studies and evaluations.
- Preparing state and federal energy facility siting/licensing applications.
- Business development, networking, and proposal/cost estimating for environmental studies projects.
- Regularly interfacing with agencies, clients, and team members.
- Executing project tasks, managing budgets/forecasts, and ensuring client satisfaction.
- Demonstrating creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in problem-solving.
- Developing, cultivating, and strengthening client relationships.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Experience with regulatory requirements and processes of the following agencies:
- National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
- State and local environmental/land use permitting.
- Energy facility siting and licensing.
- U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
- Bureau of Land Management.
- U.S. Forest Service.
- Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
- Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
- State wildlife agencies.
- Federal and state historic preservation agencies.
- Specific experience in electric transmission, power generation, and similar markets is preferred.
- Experience with resources and regulatory agencies in Colorado and the Rocky Mountain West is required.
- Local, regional, and national knowledge and relationships with existing clients is preferred.
Qualifications
- B.S. or M.S. in environmental sciences, natural sciences, planning, or related degree from an accredited program. Applicable years of experience may substitute for the degree requirement.
- Minimum 7 years of related consulting experience, including 7+ years managing environmental projects, technical teams, and business development.
- Demonstrated technical competence and project experience in natural, cultural, or socioeconomic resource fields applicable to industrial siting, licensing, and permitting.
- Ability to deal effectively with industry, government, and public contracts on project-related matters.
- Proven ability to attract/retain clients and build revenue, profit, and ROI.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Working understanding of GIS.
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office suite.
- Experience working with both private and public-sector clients.
- Client relationship development experience is a plus.
Pay
$130,000.00–235,000.00 yearly. The expected compensation range is based on individual education, qualifications, prior work experience, and work location. The total annual compensation package includes a base salary and eligibility for a discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
