About the role
A growing, family-owned infrastructure contractor is seeking a Heavy Civil Project Manager to join its team in Wichita, Kansas. The position will manage KDOT and municipal projects from preconstruction handoff through final completion and closeout, with periodic travel to job sites, agency meetings, and project reviews.
Responsibilities

- Oversee project budgets, schedules, forecasts, contracts, documentation, and overall financial performance.

- Coordinate with KDOT, municipalities, engineering departments, inspectors, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal field teams.
- Review plans, specifications, estimates, scopes, and contract requirements before construction begins.
- Partner with superintendents and field leadership to develop practical schedules, resource plans, and execution strategies.
- Track production, labor, equipment, materials, committed costs, and project profitability.
- Prepare and manage subcontracts, purchase orders, change orders, pay applications, and project correspondence.
- Identify cost, schedule, scope, and constructability risks early and develop solutions before they affect the project.
- Attend owner meetings, progress meetings, site visits, and project reviews as required.
- Maintain clear communication with leadership regarding project status, risks, financials, and upcoming decisions.
- Support estimating and bid reviews when needed, particularly for projects that may transition into your portfolio.
- Help improve project management systems and processes as the company continues to grow.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of project management experience in heavy civil, heavy highway, roadway, bridge, concrete, utility, or municipal construction.
- Experience managing DOT, municipal, or comparable public infrastructure projects.
- Strong understanding of project budgets, cost forecasting, scheduling, change management, billing, and contract administration.
- Ability to read and interpret civil plans, specifications, estimates, and contract documents.
- Experience coordinating self-performed field work, subcontractors, suppliers, inspectors, and public-agency stakeholders.
- Working knowledge of heavy civil construction methods, production rates, equipment needs, and field operations.
- Strong communication, organization, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work primarily from the Wichita office while attending site and owner meetings as needed.
- A valid driver's license and ability to travel to projects throughout the regional service area.
Nice-to-Haves
- Direct experience with KDOT requirements, documentation, and project delivery.
- Familiarity with Wichita-area municipalities, public works departments, and local engineering firms.
- Experience managing concrete paving, bridge, storm sewer, waterline, underground utility, earthwork, or roadway projects.
- Experience working for a self-performing heavy civil contractor.
- Estimating, preconstruction, or bid-review experience.
- Existing relationships with regional subcontractors, suppliers, engineers, and agency representatives.
- A degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field.
- Experience using heavy civil project management, cost-control, scheduling, and document-management software.
Pay
Base salary targeted between $110,000 and $150,000+ based on experience and project background.
Schedule
Flexible schedule to accommodate project needs and occasional travel.
