Role Summary
TruGrid is a utility-scale Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor specializing in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and solar PV projects across North America. The Project Engineering Manager leads the design and project execution of utility-scale BESS, solar, and hybrid projects from 10 MW to 400 MW. Reporting to the Director of Engineering Project Management, this role owns the execution of engineering scope on construction sites, schedule, and budget from project award through detailed design, construction support, and as-builts.
Essential Job Function & Responsibilities
- Own engineering scope, schedule, budget, and quality across utility-scale BESS, solar, and hybrid projects (10–400 MW), from project award through final IFC design and construction support.
- Manage and direct third-party design firms and lead design reviews at each milestone (30%/60%/90%/IFC) with the Owner and Owner's Engineer.
- Review and approve engineering design packages across all engineering disciplines.
- Serve as primary technical contact for the Owner, Owner's Engineer, Independent Engineer, interconnecting utility, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction.
- Develop and execute the engineering execution plan.
- Monitor progress and expenditures against schedule and budget, taking corrective action when needed.
- Lead engineering change management, RFI and submittal management, NCRs, and as-built documentation.
- Define and track engineering KPIs.
- Identify, evaluate, and mitigate technical, schedule, and operational risks; maintain a living risk register and drive mitigation jointly with the Project Manager and Client.
- Support development of technical specifications and bid packages; participate in technical bid evaluation, vendor selection, and contract negotiation in partnership with Procurement, Legal, and Project Management.
- Partner with Construction, Estimating, and Scheduling to ensure designs are constructible; support commissioning, performance testing, energization, and project closeout.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Project Engineers; foster a collaborative, safety-first engineering culture.
- Ensure all engineering deliverables comply with applicable codes and standards including NEC, NESC, IEEE (1547, 2800, 80), UL (1741, 9540, 9540A), NFPA (70, 70E, 855), ASCE, IFC and IBC.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited program or equivalent education.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience of progressive engineering and/or engineering project management experience in power generation, T&D, substations, or industrial/utility EPC projects.
- Minimum 4+ years of utility-scale BESS and/or solar PV project experience, with direct exposure to projects in the 10–400 MW range.
- Demonstrated experience leading engineering deliverables across the full project lifecycle (FEED through commissioning) and managing third-party design firms, OEMs, and Owner's Engineers.
- Prior supervisory or technical-lead experience, including mentoring junior engineers.
- Strong analytical, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills; comfortable in fast-paced, ambiguous environments.
- Valid U.S. driver's license; must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without visa sponsorship.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) / FE certification at minimum, with a clear path to PE licensure preferred.
- Proficiency with Primavera P6 and/or MS Project, AutoCAD, Procore, Bluebeam, Google Earth and Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or Engineering Management or a related engineering discipline.
- PE licensure.
- PMP certification.
- Experience with ERCOT interconnection processes and market participation requirements (CAISO and MISO experience a plus).
