About the role

Brown and Caldwell's (BC) Salt Lake City office has an exciting opportunity for a Project Engineer/Resident Engineer with experience in construction of complex water and wastewater infrastructure and facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Review construction work progress daily.
  • Oversee review of all construction activities, ensuring full compliance with plans, specifications, codes, standards, and permit requirements.
  • Oversee use of varied construction information management systems.
  • Validate documentation process and ensure reports documenting weather, equipment, manpower, and construction activities, and daily progress photos, as well as monthly progress reports for project stakeholders are completed in an accurate timely manner.
  • Evaluate and advise on change orders, invoices, and payment applications including final payment including coordination with the Owner.
  • Perform independent verification of pay quantities.
  • Audit and ensure accurate records are being maintained related to the base work, contingency and field changes.
  • Provide technical expertise in commissioning, testing, and start-up of process systems/equipment or facilities ensuring operational readiness and compliance.
  • Lead records documentation process to ensure records documents and all project, permit, and contract close-out documentation are accurate.
  • Review and provide recommendations on design and bidding documents to enhance constructability, reduce risk, and improve project delivery outcomes.
  • Proactively lead in project risks assessments, developing and executing mitigation strategies and influencing decision-making to support positive project delivery outcomes.
  • Lead auditing of complex records related to base work, contingency usage, and field changes, ensuring traceability and compliance with project controls.
  • Collaborate and facilitate resolution of complex issues in the field with clients/owners, consultants, contractors, designers and regulatory agencies, and the effected public.
  • Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.

Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of building products, construction details and relevant rules, regulations, local and national building codes, and quality standards.
  • Expertise in reading and interpreting construction plans, drawings, specifications, and contractual documents.
  • Advanced verbal/written communication and organizational skills working with multidisciplinary teams, including clients and fellow staff members.
  • Expertise in knowledge and understanding of safety requirements.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in the implementation of the daily execution of key functions while coordinating with engineering, field management and building trade staff.
  • Ability to walk around a construction site of varying size and topography to perform inspections and ability to stand for several hours observing and documenting critical construction activities.
  • Experience: Typically, a minimum of 5 years of work experience in resident engineering or related field. Preferred Experience: Increasingly responsible, professional experience in the construction and administration of municipal infrastructure, water, and wastewater facilities.

Skills

  • Knowledge and understanding of safety requirements.
  • Ability to provide design/consultation in specialized areas, make decisions and solve problems.
  • Knowledge of construction management processes, means and methods.
  • Knowledge of building products, construction details and relevant rules, regulations, local and national building codes, and quality standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a QA/QC program for construction projects as well as to review, analyze, and negotiate construction cost estimates, change orders, and contractor claims.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA 1910.
  • Understanding of all facets of the construction process.
  • Ability to successfully manage and deliver on multiple tasks with competing priorities.
  • Strong verbal/written communication skills.
  • Current and valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Advanced knowledge of standard professional software such as MS Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Expert working knowledge and experience using construction management software packages (Primavera P6, eBuilder, Microsoft Project scheduling software).
  • Advanced knowledge and experience managing and maintaining the Health & Safety requirements of construction sites.
  • Ability to walk around a construction site of varying size and topography to perform inspections and ability to stand for several hours observing and documenting critical construction activities.
  • Ability to work for extended periods of time in extreme temperatures including heat and cold.
  • Ability to wear required safety equipment at sites including hard hats, steel toed boots, reflective vest, gloves, face mask, safety harness, etc.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders and platforms to access structures for visual inspection and ability to lift objects less than 50 pounds.

Education

A degree in engineering or construction management or related field, or equivalent experience is required.

Pay

The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee’s primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.
