Project Engineer I - Sustainability
This position is bond-eligible and strictly limited to work associated with capital construction, modernization, and sustainability projects under the BuildLACCD Bond Program. Duties are exclusively tied to bond-eligible activities such as planning, design, construction, commissioning, and related project management functions for capital improvements.
About the role
The Project Engineer I – Sustainability provides technical and administrative support to the BuildLACCD Sustainability Team in the planning, design, procurement, construction, implementation, commissioning, and closeout of sustainability and energy-related capital improvement projects across the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD). Working under the Sustainability Strike Team Lead, this role assists in coordinating projects that advance the District’s sustainability initiatives, including:
- Energy Information Systems (EIS)
- Building Management Systems (Client)
- Central plant optimization
- LED lighting upgrades
- Energy efficiency retrofits
- Renewable energy systems
- Microgrids
- Electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure
- Electrification
- Other sustainability projects
Responsibilities
- Provide technical and engineering support to project managers and the sustainability team throughout all project phases.
- Support implementation of District sustainability initiatives, including energy efficiency, electrification, renewable energy, and carbon reduction strategies.
- Coordinate with Project Managers, Architects, Engineers, Contractors, and District Personnel to resolve technical issues and respond to Requests for Information (RFIs).
- Maintain and distribute current contract plans and specifications.
- Confirm contractor’s maintenance of record drawings prior to monthly progress payments.
- Conduct field checks on construction to ensure compliance with job specifications, plans, College standards, and Division of the State Architect (DSA) requirements.
- Document project progress, including photographs, daily reports, and notes.
- Assist in preparing written materials such as correspondence, reports, procedures, and guidelines.
- Log and track the status of project change order proposals, field orders, and approved change orders.
- Maintain project files and record drawings.
- Log and review submittals for conformance to plans and specifications.
- Assist in coordinating and recording minutes of meetings with project stakeholders.
- Assist in reviewing submittal procedures, RFIs, and monthly invoices.
- Perform other project support duties as directed.
Requirements
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in project or construction management of commercial, public, or educational facility construction projects valued over $15M.
- BS/BA Degree in Engineering, Architecture, Business, Construction Management, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience utilizing Building Information Modeling (BIM).
- Experience with the Division of the State Architect (DSA) construction/design process.
