About the role
Provides professional, technical, research, sampling, data collection, basic labor, and administrative work on a variety of projects within the Department of Public Works (DPW). Projects may involve any aspect of DPW functions, including horizontal infrastructure (water, sewer, roads, recreational areas), vertical infrastructure (buildings and structures), marine infrastructure, and solid waste management.
Responsibilities
- Conduct research and data collection
- Perform evaluations, planning, design, and construction inspection
- Conduct surveys and manage contracting and contract administration
- Prepare plans, specifications, cost estimates, and contract documents for construction projects
- Write reports, maintain accurate records, and communicate effectively
- Respond to public inquiries with tact and courtesy, even in high-stress situations
- Operate computers for word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and engineering/drafting/design software
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- Up to three (3) years of experience in engineering, survey, or construction (preferred)
- Class D driver’s license (required)
- Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam certificate (preferred)
- Ability to obtain Drinking Water and Wastewater operator licenses as required by the specific Project Engineer position
Qualifications
- Knowledge of Civil Engineering principles, practices, design standards, methods, techniques, materials, and equipment related to DPW projects (roads, water, sewer, etc.)
- Familiarity with state and local regulations governing DPW infrastructure design, construction, and repair
- Some knowledge of state and local procurement regulations and policies
- Proficiency in engineering, drafting, and design software, as well as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills
- Ability to work independently and maintain accurate records
