Project Engineer - Decatur, IL
This role is based at the East Plant in Decatur, IL and reports to the site Project Engineering Manager. The Project Engineer is a key member of the east plant improvement organization, overseeing the design and implementation of capital projects, managing AFE lifecycle, and executing projects in partnership with improvement and process technology engineering teams.
Responsibilities
- Ensure stewardship of viable capital projects from inception to commissioning in partnership with improvement engineers.
- Manage personnel and resources to balance schedules, budgets, and scope/quality of projects.
- Prepare AFEs and manage lifecycle from creation through capitalization.
- Provide oversight of equipment and contractor personnel by working in the field on a daily basis.
- Communicate project activities and key metrics to managers and stakeholders verbally and in writing.
- Develop requests for proposals, equipment sizing, utility lists, detailed P&IDs, and other front-end engineering tasks.
- Proactively participate in safety, environmental, quality, and production processes to ensure compliance with company policies.
- Assist in developing operating procedures and training production personnel on unit operations for start-up.
- Maintain awareness of industry trends and investigate means to improve, implement, and manage projects, including capturing lessons learned and developing best practices.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant engineering standards and internal procedures.
- Develop colleagues through training, technical support, and mentoring opportunities.
Requirements
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years of project/process engineering experience; PSM experience is a plus.
- Ability to apply engineering competencies to practical real-world situations.
- Design processing systems and equipment required for the production of food-grade products.
- General knowledge of codes, relevant standards, and materials/metallurgy related to processing equipment.
- Knowledge of industrial chemical and food production plant processes, including pressure vessels, reactors, distillation, spray drying, piping, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, controls, dry powder technologies, utilities, packaging, and other unit operations.
- Strong leadership, management, and interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution, motivation, and mentoring.
- Ability to interact effectively with multiple employees and managers across various locations.
- Strong organizational skills to handle multiple ongoing tasks and continuously improve using independent judgment.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and manage personnel, budgets, schedules, and resources.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- General knowledge of software systems such as PI, Maximo, Microsoft Office (Project, Excel, Word, SharePoint), and AutoCAD.
Physical Demands
- Work in a plant environment with general instructions from management.
- Ability to climb stairs, lift 50 pounds, stand or sit for prolonged periods, work on computers, and navigate confined spaces or heights.
- Flexibility to work adjusted hours as instructed.
- Prompt and consistent attendance is required.
- Potential exposure to various chemical and food allergens; notify hiring manager if such exposure interferes with job performance.
Pay
The pay range for this salaried position is expected to be between $76,100.00 and $142,700.00. Base pay may vary depending on market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Hourly and salaried non-exempt employees will also receive overtime pay for qualifying hours. The total compensation package includes an annual bonus under the Salaried Incentive Plan.
