Project Engineer
Wright Brothers Construction Company, Inc. is seeking an experienced Project Engineer to support our heavy civil operations in the Chimney Rock, NC area. This role is responsible for overseeing on-site highway and civil construction activities, ensuring projects are executed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with all plans and specifications.
Responsibilities
- Safety & Compliance
- Support and enforce company safety policies and procedures on all job sites
- Participate in daily safety meetings and toolbox talks
- Conduct and document site inspections (traffic control, trench safety, environmental compliance, etc.)
- Lead required safety and environmental reporting for project owners
- Ensure compliance with owner-specific safety programs
- Aid in developing and implementing safety training initiatives
- Project Coordination & Execution
- Support the Project Manager in planning and executing project activities
- Maintain current project plans, specifications, and documentation
- Cookordinate and communicate project activities across departments and teams
- Assist in developing project schedules and tracking progress against milestones
- Provide daily and weekly reporting on project status, productivity, and performance
- Track subcontractor progress and ensure alignment with project timelines
- Documentation & Reporting
- Prepare and manage submittals, RFIs, permits, and project documentation
- Maintain accurate records including trench logs, utility locates, and compliance reports
- Cookordinate meeting agendas and document key outcomes
- Develop and support project reporting processes and metrics
- Financial & Administrative Support
- Review, code, and reconcile invoices against verified quantities
- Maintain purchase orders and track project-related expenses
- Review subcontractor invoices for accuracy and compliance
- Track material inventory (on-site and in transit) and manage surplus materials
- Support weekly payroll distribution
- Communication & Team Collaboration
- Serve as a key communication link between field teams, management, and external stakeholders
- Build and maintain strong relationships with owners, contractors, and internal teams
- Ensure all team members understand project expectations, responsibilities, and deadlines
- Qualifications
- Associate degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred
- 3–5 years of experience in highway or heavy civil construction preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Experience with HCSS HeavyJob, CAD, or Viewpoint is a plus
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Physical Requirements & Work Environment
- Ability to work long hours, including non-standard shifts and break times
- Comfortable working at heights (up to 100+ feet), in enclosed spaces, and in varying outdoor conditions
- Ability to walk extended distances on job sites (½ mile or more)
- Must be able to lift and move items up to 50 lbs as needed
- Required to wear standard PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots)
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and physical
- Willingness to take on additional responsibilities as needed
