About The Role

The Senior Project Engineer I position at J. A. Watts, LLC. offers an exciting opportunity for experienced engineers to lead and manage complex infrastructure projects. This role involves overseeing all aspects of project execution, including engineering design, procurement, and construction inspection. The successful candidate will lead multidisciplinary teams in developing innovative solutions for electrical power distribution systems, transportation infrastructure, roadway lighting, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), vehicle charging stations, pump stations, and fiber optic networks. The role requires a proactive approach to project planning, execution, and communication, ensuring projects are completed on time, within scope, and within budget. The Senior Project Engineer I will play a critical role in developing detailed plans, specifications, estimates, and reports to support both vertical and horizontal infrastructure projects. The position demands a hands-on leader who is comfortable working in dynamic environments, often reporting to the Lisle office or a project site at least three days per week, depending on project requirements or managerial directives.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited program.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of professional experience in electrical power distribution, roadway lighting, ITS, or traffic signals design and development is required.
  • Candidates should hold a Professional Engineer (PE) license or demonstrate the ability to obtain one within the first year of employment.
  • Strong analytical skills, critical thinking, and methodical problem-solving capabilities are essential.
  • Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in working within multi-disciplinary teams, including civil and mechanical engineers, and possess excellent communication skills—both written and verbal.
  • The role requires strong time management abilities, attention to detail, and organizational skills to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code, standard engineering practices, and experience designing electrical systems supporting infrastructure projects are critical.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, or MicroStation is necessary.
  • Knowledge of roadway lighting, fiber optic infrastructure, and ITS systems is highly preferred.
  • Candidates should also have a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel for site visits.
  • NCEES account registration for licensing in other jurisdictions is a plus.

Responsibilities

Oversee and coordinate all technical aspects of assigned projects, including contract submissions, design development, testing, and data analysis, providing expert advice and suggestions as needed.
Review project plans and proposals, recommending updates or maintaining changes to ensure accuracy and compliance.
Perform complex technical tasks such as construction layout, engineering calculations verification, construction inspection, and field testing to ensure quality standards.
Prepare and distribute detailed specifications, project timelines, and progress reports to internal teams and external clients.
Monitor project progress, ensuring adherence to budgets and schedules, and provide regular status updates.
Allocate resources effectively within the project scope and budget, making adjustments as necessary to optimize performance.
Manage external contractors and serve as the primary point of contact for project coordination and communication.
Implement quality control measures, conduct regular project reviews, and report on project status and compliance.
Engage with clients daily, providing updates and addressing concerns to foster strong relationships and ensure client satisfaction.
Ensure all project activities comply with federal, state, and local regulations, maintaining the company's reputation for integrity and excellence.
Collaborate with team members across disciplines to facilitate seamless project execution and problem-solving.
Perform additional duties as assigned by management to support project and organizational goals.
