PROJECT ENGINEER What Flexware Does Manufacturers are the backbone of innovation—powering industries, improving lives, and keeping the world moving forward. That’s where Flexware Innovation comes in. Behind every great product is a complex web of machines, technology, data, and people working together to make it happen. Flexware partners with manufacturers to guide their strategy and execute the solutions that bring it to life. Founded in 1996, Flexware’s teams of talented advisors and engineers leverage technology across industrial controls, manufacturing systems integration, software development, data engineering and management, and the ever-evolving landscape of emerging technologies. Flexware is made up of problem-solvers, builders, and collaborators who care deeply about doing work that matters. We roll up our sleeves, dive into the details, and create solutions that stand the test of time, because our customers count on us to keep production moving. Today, Flexware is growing with fresh momentum and purpose. We’re investing in innovation, in our people, and in a culture where you can do your best work while living a balanced, meaningful life. What You Will Do The Project Engineer owns the technical shape of a project from award through commissioning. You take a sold scope — an estimate, a statement of work, a set of customer requirements — and turn it into clearly defined work packages that staff engineers can pick up and execute with confidence. You are accountable for the engineering content of the plan, while the Project Manager owns schedule, budget and the commercial relationship. This role sits within the Industrial Automation & Controls service line, which delivers ISA-95 Levels 0 through 2: field devices and instrumentation, control, and supervisory SCADA/HMI. You will work across that full span rather than in a single layer. Work package definition — the core of this roleDecompose a sold project scope into discrete, executable work packages with clear boundaries, inputs, outputs and acceptance criteria Size each package so a staff engineer can own it end to end, and sequence packages against dependencies, equipment availability and the commissioning window Write the engineering detail a package needs to be picked up without you in the room — references to drawings, I/O lists, design specifications, standards and reusable patterns from prior work Identify which packages need senior judgement and which can be delivered by an engineer with oversight, and flag that staffing shape early Keep packages current as scope, schedule or site conditions change; surface the impact rather than absorbing it silently Technical ownership and designTranslate customer requirements into functional and design specifications across control and supervisory layers Make and document architecture decisions — controller and network topology, I/O strategy, recipe and mode handling, alarm and safety approach Review the work of other engineers for correctness, consistency and maintainability, and give feedback that raises the standard of the team Reference proven patterns from comparable systems rather than designing every job from a blank sheet Delivery and commissioningSupport IO checkout, dry and wet commissioning, and startup, on site where the project requires it Troubleshoot across the stack — field devices, controller logic, networks and HMI — under production pressure Direct and review the work of subcontracted commissioning resources when a project uses them Close the loop on as-built documentation so the next engineer inherits an accurate picture Customer and teamLead technical conversations with customer engineering and operations, and translate between engineering detail and business outcome Partner with the Project Manager on scope changes, surfacing engineering impact, effort and risk in time for a decision Contribute to estimates and proposals, bringing realism from delivery experience Mentor engineers informally — this role is a multiplier on the people around it Provide detailed documentation to clients on system design and programmingPlease note that we are not interviewing candidates that require sponsorship now or in the future** What You Might Have Done Before Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, and/or equivalent work experience Experience in industrial automation and controls is required — this is not a role we can train from an adjacent discipline Track record of breaking a project down into work others executed, and being accountable for the result Hands-on delivery across ISA-95 Levels 0–2: instrumentation and field devices, PLC control, and SCADA/HMI Rockwell toolchain — ControlLogix and GuardLogix (1756-L8x), Studio 5000 Logix Designer, FactoryTalk SCADA/HMI development, ideally including Ignition (Perspective and Vision) Industrial networking — Ethernet/IP, managed switches, VLAN segregation Drives and safety — VFD commissioning (PowerFlex or similar), safety circuit design, E-stop integration, PL/SIL determination Comfortable in customer-facing meetings and on a plant floor, including safety requirements such as NFPA 70E, OSHA 10, PPE, LOTO and arc flash awareness Travel of approximately 25–35%, with support of up to two weeks on site during commissioning periods How We Will Assess You We level to evidence, not to years. Titles and tenure are not proxies for capability — we benchmark what you have actually designed, delivered and commissioned. The central question for this role is whether you can structure work for other people, not only execute it yourself, so expect to walk us through a real project you decomposed and what you would do differently now. Flexware is a customer-satisfaction, billable services business rather than a plant engineering organization. We look for people who can build, not only maintain, and who can carry the technical relationship with a customer. To be clear about the bar: strong hands-on delivery alone is an Engineer profile. What distinguishes this role is the ability to structure work for other people — to take an ambiguous scope and produce packages someone else can execute well. We assess that directly, and we level to what you can evidence rather than to the title you are seeking.
