About the Role

A Project Engineer is responsible for advanced tasks in the development, management, and execution of construction and asphalt projects, including leadership of Field and/or Construction Engineers. This role requires a degree in Construction or Engineering and 5–10 years of industry experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Project Manager in formulating and updating the project schedule.
  • Build and maintain a CPM (Critical Path Method) schedule.
  • Initiate purchase orders, subcontract agreements, and change orders for Project Manager review.
  • Track weekly production quantities for accurate weekly and monthly cost reports.
  • Produce and verify monthly pay requests with the owner.
  • Process all shop drawings, submittals, and coordinate material deliveries with the Project Superintendent.
  • Verify all monthly accruals, revenue, and costs.
  • Schedule the Quality Control Team.
  • Communicate and coordinate with assigned subcontractors.
  • Maintain the project schedule, including materials, equipment, and subcontractors.
  • Schedule and arrange equipment moves on and off the job site.
  • Define and optimize project means and methods (in collaboration with the Project Manager).
  • Ensure administrative and accounting information from the field is accurate and complete.
  • Participate in the final acceptance of the project (with the Project Manager).
  • Maintain a safe working environment.
  • Oversee onsite Construction and Field Engineers.

Requirements

  • Five or more years of experience as a Project Engineer, with an emphasis on roads, highways, and bridges.
  • College degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management.
  • Strong operational foundation with the ability to direct field operations.
  • Sound business and operational judgment; ability to distinguish effective solutions.
  • Proficiency in software such as Excel, Primavera, and SAP.
  • Familiarity with construction industry practices.
  • Ability to understand work directions and communicate effectively with project managers and on-site employees.
  • Strong oral, written, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage and supervise engineering on multiple projects.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to sit and/or stand during an eight-hour workday.
  • Occasionally required to stoop, bend, walk, crouch, and climb.
  • Ability to frequently lift at least 25 pounds and carry up to 15 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Continuous mental attention required to complete tasks efficiently.
  • Exposure to dust, dirt, grease, and noise.
  • Work at heights up to 60 feet, including climbing ladders, scaffolds, and stair towers with narrow steps.
  • Frequent walking on uneven surfaces in varying weather conditions.
  • Flexible schedule based on project needs and demands.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Exposure to noise, grease, and dust typical of a plant environment; engineering controls and/or personal protective equipment provided to ensure OSHA compliance.
  • Regular work near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
  • Exposure to substances such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, and diesel fuel, with no levels exceeding OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits.
