About the role

GEI’s Oakland, California office is seeking a Project Civil Engineer to join our growing water resources engineering practice. This is an opportunity to take a meaningful technical and project leadership role on complex water infrastructure projects throughout Northern California and across the United States. You’ll work on dams, spillways, outlet works, levees, pipelines and open-channel conveyance systems, water storage and recharge facilities, and other heavy civil infrastructure, from planning and design through construction.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a Task Manager and technical lead for engineering tasks and project elements, managing assigned scope, schedule, budget, and staffing.
  • Perform and lead civil engineering analyses, calculations, 3D modeling, and design for dams, spillways, outlet works, levees, conveyance systems, water storage and recharge facilities, and other heavy civil infrastructure.
  • Develop engineering solutions from planning and conceptual design through final design and construction.
  • Prepare and coordinate technical memoranda, engineering reports, design calculations, construction drawings, technical specifications, cost estimates, schedules, and other project deliverables.
  • Take technical deliverables through final-draft completion, applying GEI’s QA/QC procedures and reviewing calculations, drawings, reports, and other work prepared by project staff.
  • Delegate and coordinate subtasks, schedule and mentor junior staff, review their work, and provide technical direction to project team members.
  • Anticipate technical and project delivery challenges, evaluate alternatives, develop practical engineering solutions, and proactively communicate project status and needs to Project Managers and senior technical staff.
  • Coverage of engineering drawings using AutoCAD and Civil 3D and provide technical direction and review of design documents.
  • Participate in client meetings and work with Project Managers to understand client needs, communicate technical information, and deliver responsive client service.
  • Support proposal development and business development efforts, including technical approaches, scopes of work, staffing, schedules, cost estimates, and identification of opportunities to provide additional services to existing clients.
  • Travel to project sites and other GEI offices as required, including occasional overnight travel and temporary out-of-area assignments.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of California, or ability to obtain California PE registration within an agreed-upon timeframe.
  • Typically 5–8 years of relevant civil engineering experience; demonstrated capability and level of responsibility will be considered in addition to years of experience.
  • Experience in the planning, analysis, design, and/or construction of water resources facilities, hydraulic structures, or comparable heavy civil infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently formulate and execute technical assignments with limited oversight, manage multiple priorities and deadlines, and effectively coordinate with Project Managers and senior technical staff.
  • Experience leading technical tasks, managing task-level scope, schedule, and budget, and coordinating and mentoring junior staff.
  • Ability to review technical work and consistently produce high-quality calculations, drawings, specifications, reports, and other engineering deliverables.
  • Working knowledge of applicable engineering principles, codes, design standards, and industry practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical information effectively with project teams and clients.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Willingness and ability to perform field work and travel as project needs require.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with dams, spillways, outlet works, levees, pipelines, open-channel conveyance systems, water storage, recharge facilities, or similar water infrastructure.
  • Experience with reinforced-concrete hydraulic structures and other heavy civil infrastructure.
  • Experience serving as a Task Manager, technical lead, or Assistant Project Manager.
  • Experience preparing construction drawings, technical specifications, engineer’s estimates, design reports, and engineering calculations.
  • Construction-phase engineering or construction management experience.
  • Familiarity with California water infrastructure, regulatory requirements, and public-sector clients.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams involving civil, geotechnical, structural, hydraulic, environmental, and construction disciplines.
  • Experience participating in client meetings and proposal development.
  • Experience with M.S. degree in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related discipline.
