Project Architect - Healthcare

About the Role

McMillan Pazdan Smith is an award-winning architecture, interior design, and advisory services firm with eight studios located in the southeast. We pride ourselves on strong client relationships and community partnerships. We are seeking a creative, innovative, and talented Project Architect to join our Healthcare team in Columbia, SC.

This role involves providing high-level production supervision for projects with complex features such as conflicting design requirements and difficult coordination. You will assist the Project Manager with all aspects of multiple small to large-scale projects, ensuring efficient and cost-effective execution. As the primary client liaison, you will manage schedules, budgets, and scope of work to ensure client satisfaction.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate all project efforts, administrative and technical, to ensure efficient execution.
• Serve as primary client liaison to manage schedules, budgets, and scope of work.
• Actively manage client budgets, schedules, programs, project communications, and documentation.
• Estimate fees, determine scope of work, and prepare proposals.
• Supervise the preparation and accuracy of contract documents.
• Incorporate applicable codes, construction techniques, and cross-discipline coordination into projects.
• Supervise and/or perform site observations, recording and reporting existing conditions and construction progress.
• Address problems and questions during construction.
• Maintain project cost control.
• Handle external communications, including calls and correspondence with clients, officials, and contractors.
• Write reports such as feasibility studies, condition reports, and recommendations.
• Supervise and perform building code reviews and prepare applications.
• Make major design decisions involving spatial, aesthetic, and material detailing.
• Document project progression through correspondence and memos.
• Follow projects through approvals and construction.
• Initiate contact with clients and town officials.
• Exercise professional judgment in contractual liability matters.
• Make public presentations and act as a thought leader.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Architecture or equivalent.
• Registered as a licensed architect.
• 8-12 years of experience as an architect.
• Experience leading a project team.
• Knowledge of estimating project needs and translating them into budget hours/costs.
• Ability to monitor and adjust budgets to stay on track.
• Leadership skills to guide a team through task sequences and meet milestones.
• Proficiency with Revit, Enscape, and Bluebeam.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite and Newforma software.
• Excellent grasp of building technology fundamentals.
• Thorough knowledge of relevant codes, operations, processes, and trends.
• Excellent time management skills.
• Ability to prioritize and execute tasks with competing priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master of Architecture.
• Experience with Newforma Project Center and/or Newforma Project Analyzer.
• Experience with Microsoft Project.
• Additional relevant certifications (e.g., construction administration, interior design, LEED/Green Globes sustainability).
