About the role
Make a lasting difference in students’ lives by serving as a coach, mentor, and advocate. In this role, you’ll empower high school students from diverse backgrounds through academic support, goal-setting, and college preparation, helping them realize their potential and navigate their path to success.
Responsibilities
- Develops and implements engaging and interactive lesson plans in various subjects, including mathematics, science, English, foreign languages, and social studies.
- Enforce and abide by Upward Bound rules and regulations.
- Participate in Staff Training, scheduled staff meetings, etc.
- Provides individualized tutoring and academic support to students to enhance their understanding and performance in core subjects.
- Makes regular assessments of student progress, provides constructive feedback to students and their parents or guardians.
- Collaborates with other instructors and staff members to coordinate educational activities, workshops, and field trips.
- Mentors and guides students in setting academic goals and developing effective study skills.
- Assists students in preparing for standardized tests, including ACT and SAT, by offering test-taking strategies and practice sessions.
- Provides guidance and support to students in the college application process, including researching colleges, writing personal statements, and applying for scholarships and financial aid.
- Maintains accurate records of student attendance, academic performance, and program activities.
- Understands and respects diverse beliefs and/or opinions with students and staff.
- Maintains a safe working area and conditions at all times.
- Dresses professionally and appropriately as related to the discipline.
- Completes all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Skill Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Mathematics, Science, English, or a related discipline.
- Minimum two (2) years teaching experience in the specific subject matter, preferred.
- Previous experience in teaching or tutoring, preferably with high school students from diverse backgrounds.
- Knowledge of curriculum development and instructional strategies tailored to meet the needs of disadvantaged youth.
- Familiarity with college admissions processes, financial aid, and scholarship opportunities.
- Strong interpersonal skills, patient and the ability to establish rapport with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Excellent communication skills, organizational skills, attention to detail and a passion for teaching.
- Adaptability to meet the diverse needs of our students.
- Willingness to extend self to help students succeed.
- Ability to adapt teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
- Proficiency in using educational technology and online learning platforms.
- Current knowledge of programs, objectives, and requirements.
- Commitment to promoting a positive and inclusive learning environment for all students.
