Program Specialist

About the Role

Under supervision of the Director of Special Education, the Program Specialist will assist in the provision of quality special education services, will conduct staff professional development trainings and will coordinate, plan and implement special education programs.

Responsibilities

• Assists in the evaluation, assessment and placement of students into appropriate educational services, including inter-district and intra-SELPA, non-public, state residential, and County Office of Education (COE) schools, as well as community agencies and programs.
• Monitors and evaluates the provision of programs and services; evaluates student progress and balances the rights of students and parents with the interests of districts and agencies.
• Possesses specific knowledge in the areas of autism, emotional disturbance, SLD, and post-secondary transition process and practice.
• Provides technical assistance to administrators and teachers in instructional planning and modification of the regular education program to meet the needs of special needs students.
• Assists parents and students in understanding assessment and educational services.
• Assists in program placement, planning and evaluation for initial IEPs, annual/triennial IEPs and IEE requests.
• Assists in the hiring process of qualified special education staff.
• Provides formal and informal staff development services.
• Possesses knowledge of common core curriculum, assessment and instruction; learning styles and strategies.
• Designs and obtains staff development resources.
• Plans and implements mentoring (training) program for new special education teachers.
• Locates and obtains curricular resources.
• Interprets state and federal special education laws.
• Assists in the development of district policies and procedures.
• Participates in compliance reviews, mediations and due process hearings.

Qualifications

• Valid Special Education teaching credential and/or a clinical services, health services, or school psychologist authorization.
• Advanced training and related experience in the education of individuals with disabilities in public school settings.
• Education: Bachelor's degree, Master's degree or equivalent experience.

Physical Demands

• Must be able to lift, carry, push or pull items with a strength factor of up to 25 pounds.
• Hear and speak in audible tones to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
• Have mobility sufficient to move about, stand, and/or sit for extended periods, and access all locations in the work environment.
• Have flexibility and strength to reach with hands and arms, reach above shoulder level as necessary and, be able to bend and stoop.
• Have manual dexterity to appropriately control and manipulate objects, materials, and equipment used on the job, including telephone and computer.
• Ability to drive to all district facilities and necessary meetings and conferences.
