Program Specialist

About the role

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego (BGCGSD) changes lives through quality programs and guidance in a safe, affordable, and fun environment. Program Specialists coordinate and oversee enrichment and specialty programs within after-school programs at ASES Middle School Sites. Under the direct supervision of the Site Supervisor, this role provides targeted support to afterschool staff, ensures specialty programs (e.g., STEM, arts, financial literacy, leadership) run smoothly, and aligns activities with school educational objectives. The Program Specialist works closely with afterschool staff, monitors program effectiveness, and ensures all students have a positive and enriching experience.

Responsibilities

• Supervise members in program areas; monitor safety and behavior, maintain a safe and positive atmosphere, and implement discipline and classroom management techniques.
• Demonstrate positive values and ethical behavior through program quality and appearance.
• Research, plan, and lead organized learning activities to develop academic, physical, and social skills.
• Act as an active, positive team member by communicating effectively with supervisors, staff, volunteers, and members.
• Develop culturally relevant daily lesson plans and differentiate activities for students with various abilities.
• Coordinate assigned program services and cooperative learning activities that are both fun and instructional.
• Participate in evaluating the effectiveness of activities and events; promote and stimulate program participation.
• Provide guidance and role modeling to members; ensure daily set-up and clean-up of materials.
• Ensure equipment is in good condition, safety precautions are posted, and members are instructed in proper and safe use.
• Maintain accurate program attendance records and submit them in a timely manner.
• Assess facility needs and perform janitorial duties or manual labor as needed (e.g., mopping, cleaning tables, trash removal, painting, moving equipment).
• Display high enthusiasm and commitment for activities; perform administrative tasks as assigned.

Safety & Wellness

• Ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for youth, staff, and visitors by enforcing safety protocols and organizational policies.
• Proactively identify and report safety concerns or maintenance requirements.
• Participate in safety drills and contribute to risk assessment and emergency preparedness efforts.
• Contribute to the ongoing improvement of Club safety and wellness policies and procedures.

Qualifications

• At least 18 years of age.
• High School diploma or GED required; Associates degree preferred.
• Minimum of 48 units of college curriculum or completion of the Classroom Assistant Proficiency Exam (CAPE) required; or a combination of knowledge and experience.
• Two years’ experience working directly with school-aged youth and knowledge of youth development required.
• Demonstrated ability to plan and implement quality programs for youth; instruct, coach, and direct varied activities.
• Skill to implement and supervise a positive learning environment incorporating academics, enrichment, and recreation; motivate and engage youth and manage behavioral challenges with peer mediation.
• Proficient computer skills: Microsoft Office, email, internet research, social media navigation.
• Ability to lead and control groups of children in various recreational and educational activities and settings.
• Ability to respond according to procedure for emergency and disciplinary situations.
• Effective communication with youth, parents, staff, volunteers, and community partners.
• CPR and First Aid Certifications required within 30 days of hire.
• Ability to be active and on your feet for a minimum of five hours each day.

Special Conditions of Employment

• Successful completion of pre-employment background check.
• Maintain compliance with the organization's drug-free workplace policy.
• Occasional weekend and evenings in support of fundraising events, committee meetings, and activities.
• Clear TB test as required by the school district.
• CPR & First Aid Certification.
• Comply with COVID protocols.
• 48 college units or pass a test administered by the district.
• Submission of high school diploma or college transcript.
