The programs in the Department of Patient Counseling are designed to assist individuals to work in the health field as skilled professionals dealing with the whole person in the context of life’s crises and in a cooperative interprofessional team approach. The programs are offered to persons who have an existing identity in a helping or counseling profession, including clergy, social workers, institutional counselors, education specialists, psychologists, community health workers, and others in the health care professions.
Responsibilities
- Provide administrative and operational support for all Patient Counseling Department programs.
- Acquire, maintain, and apply knowledge of university, college, and program policies and processes.
- Manage department financial information (purchases, tracking expenses, reconciling budget).
- Manage department records retention within university guidelines.
- Coordinate programmatic assessment and evaluation activities.
- Communicate with guest speakers/lecturers regarding their needs and content objectives.
- Work directly with program faculty to coordinate curricular activities.
- Assist with marketing and event planning, including development of marketing material according to VCU brand standards.
- Collect data and generate departmental reports.
- Communicate with all students and faculty regarding all aspects of the programs.
- Manage the department’s social media and other communication platforms.
- Maintain student records in accordance with state, university, and specialty accreditation standards.
Student Support
- Prepare student applications for admissions review and process admission decisions.
- Assist current and potential students with questions on university and program policies and procedures.
- Assist with recruitment events.
- Administer departmental-awarded scholarships.
- Assist with planning graduation activities and other special events.
- Develop and execute external communications for the alumni community.
Faculty Support
- Provide administrative support to teaching and advising faculty.
- Provide faculty with meeting, conference, and travel support.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- 3 or more years of relevant professional experience.
- Previous work experience in higher education.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication in daily interactions.
- Proficient in Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Acrobat.
- Demonstrated ability to manage responsibilities and complete assignments with minimal direction.
- Excellence in customer service skills.
- Proven ability to prioritize work, handle multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to handle confidential matters and exercise professional discretion.
- Ability to independently problem-solve using sound judgment, including identifying potential problem areas and developing appropriate plans of action.
- Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions to problems.
- Ability to clearly articulate specific information in project management.
- Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a relevant field.
- Curriculum/adult learning principles certificate.
- Educational programming experience.
- Proficiency in Banner, Canvas, SLATE, Courseleaf, DocuSign, Constant Contact, ImageNow, SAS, and statistical analysis software.

$71,000 - $86,000
