Description
This is the experienced-level class in the Library Assistant series. Incumbents primarily perform routine circulation and customer service tasks at the circulation desk, including checking materials in/out, collecting fines and fees, issuing library cards. Incumbents may also be required to interpret library policies related to the circulation of materials and to resolve customer issues with established policies. Incumbents may provide general clerical support, assist with the maintenance of library collections, provide basic reference and readers' advisory services, present library programs, and be responsible for assisting with opening and closing procedures.
Examples of Duties
- Provides a high level of customer service.
- Retrieves library materials from interior and exterior book drops.
- Collects, sorts and shelves all library materials using different filing systems, checks materials in and out, collects fines and fees.
- Checks shelves and corrects placement of books, including relocating library materials as required and searches shelves for lost or missing materials.
- Processes hold requests.
- Keeps library premises clean and in good order, clears the library of customers at closing, collects loose books and materials, performs item counting and sorting.
- Lifts and transports boxes of books and materials.
- Spot-checks books and materials for needed repair and identifies worn or damaged items for withdraw or replacement.
- Provides assistance to customers by answering basic questions about library operations, the location of materials and refers customers to appropriate library staff and departments.
- Assists customers with the operation of copiers and fax machines including issuing refunds when necessary.
- Processes new and current books, materials and periodicals.
- Performs minor and routine maintenance of copy machines or computers.
- Moves furniture, equipment and supplies as assigned.
- Explains and interprets library policies and procedures.
- Enters and updates information into library databases.
- Issues library cards and updates customer records.
- Investigates and resolves disputed customer accounts.
- Affords assistance with opening and closing procedures, including arming/disarming security systems and locking/unlocking buildings.
- Affords assistance with groups using facilities for events and provides assistance at special events.
- Provides general clerical support, including preparation and maintenance of lists, reports, flyers, other documents, and statistical data reports.
- Affords assistance with the development of library collections, including ordering, withdrawls, and inventory controls.
- Affords assistance with library programs, including conducting classes, clubs, special events, community events and outreach activities.

- Interpret, explain and apply Federal, State and District laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures.
- PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. This classification requires continuous walking between work areas and prolonged standing in work areas. Finger, hand and arm dexterity is needed to retrieve, process, and store library materials, as well as to enter and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, typewriter or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach as well as push and pull heavy book carts of up to 100 pounds and to retrieve and store materials. Positions in the classification frequently lift and carry library materials that typically weigh less than 50 pounds.
- Education, License and Experience: Equivalent to graduation from high school and two (2) years outside or one (1) year District work experience in shelving books, processing materials and providing library support and relevant computer software applicaiton packages are desirable. Training in public relations also desirable.
- Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
- The following list is based on the MOU dated June 25, 2008, for the period beginning July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2013.
- Holidays: (7 days) - New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day without pay.
- Part-time hourly employees may request one (1) week's leave without pay after six (6) months of employment. After one year, such employees may request annual leave without pay up to a maximum of two (2) weeks. The Supervisor based upon the needs of the District will approve such requests.
- Medical, Dental, Vision: All part-time employees who work a minimum of 17 hours per week may purchase any of the current medical benefits and shall pay the entire premium themselves through an automatic payroll deduction.
